Abstract
235,229. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. June 7, 1924, [Convention date]. Filaments, supports for.- In a machine for forming and inserting a number of wire supports simultaneously into glass stems, the mechanism for making each support is assembled as a separate unit, and any required number of such units may be placed and spaced equally around a central sealing-in zone in the machine. Concentric annular surfaces 82, 85 are arranged around the sealing-in zone 6 to receive the units 5, which are secured in the necessary positions by bolts 83, 84. In each unit, the wire is fed from a reel 87 by means of rollers 93 after being cleaned by a brush 90 and is bent round at one end to form a " pigtail " by a coiler 115, and after being severed from the length of wire each pigtail is carried to the sealing-in position by a gripper 189 oscillating about a shaft 175. All the wire-feeding rollers of the several units are operated by screw-gear pinions engaging with a common crown-wheel 21, and the coilers and pigtail carriers are similarly operated by crown-wheels 20, 19 respectively, the wheel 21 being rotated intermittently by a double roller clutch 55 and the wheels 19, 20 oscillated. Graduated scales are provided to facilitate the positioning of the units. To coil the wire, its free end 138, Fig. 8, is fed across the cam-shaped end 137 of a coiling-head 27, against which it is pressed by contacting with a curved plate 140. A mandrel 127 is then advanced axially through the head 27 to the position shown, and the head is rotated. After forming the coil the mandrel is retracted by an adjustable projection on the crown-wheel 20, which simultaneously moves a cutter across the end of the wire-guide 111 and severs the pigtail, this being supported by a block 146 mounted on a spring- controlled lever 141. The carrier 189. then depresses the block 146 and seizes the pigtail. This carrier comprises a gripper having a rigid blade and a resilient blade mounted on a block 194 frictionally secured to the oscillating shaft 175, the oscillation of the gripper being limited by adjustable stops 192, 193, Fig. 6, engaging fixed stops 190, 191. When the grippers are arrested in either direction the shaft 175 continues to turn and carries with it an arcuate wedge 180 which, being located between the blades of the gripper, opens or closes it as required. At the sealing-in position 6 the ends of the pigtails are laid in notches in an annular die 274 which forms the " top " on the glass stem when this is pressed down by its carrier and heated by gas-burners 270. The stem carrier comprises two jaws 245, Fig. 3, pivoted at 248 and closed bv a spring 249, and is oscillated between the vertical or loading position and the horizontal or sealing-in position by a cam-operated shaft 225 to which it is connected by bevel gearing in a housing 228. A sliding gauge 253 mounted on the carrier is controlled by a fixed cam 256 so as to be in position for locating the end of the stem at the loading position, but to be withdrawn when in the sealing position as shown in Fig. 3.
