Abstract
A laminate comprises a translucent layer 1 bonded to a substrate 4 by a substantially opaque adhesive 3 . The translucent layer may bear an image 2. The adhesive may be white and contain titanium dioxide as pigment and may be a hot melt adhesive. The substrate may be made from foam rubber. The translucent layer may be selected from PVC, polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate or a translucent paper. The preferred application is for computer mouse mats but other applications include drinks coasters, table mats, counter mats, change mats and bar mats.
Description
2351943 LAMINATES The present invention relates generally to laminates and
the process of manufacture thereof, and in particular to laminates bearing an image.
An example of such a printed laminate is a mat for a computer mouse. The conventional mouse mat is a laminate consisting of five layers:
(i) a translucent layer of e.g. PVC, polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate or any other synthetic material, or a translucent paper; (ii) an image printed on one surface of the translucent layer; (iii) an opaque white layer of ink screen-printed on the printed image; (iv) a layer of pressure-sensitive or impact-sensitive adhesive on the white layer; and (v) a substrate in the form of a protective, non-slip support layer, made from e.g.
foarn rubber.
The adhesive is often applied to the substrate prior to supply to the manufacturer of the mouse mat. It is delivered to the manufacturer with a silicone release paper protecting the adhesive.
Alternatively, some manufacturers purchase the substrate and adhesive tape separately and join the two together before removing the silicone release paper and bonding the substrate to the printed translucent layer.
It would be desirable to provide a laminate of the above type which is simpler in structure and which is therefore cheaper to manufacture.
The present inventor has appreciated that it would be possible to apply an opaque adhesive directly on the image printed on the translucent layer, thereby avoiding the need to apply a separate coating of opaque ink. Such an adhesive is currently commercially available in the form of a hot- melt coated opaque adhesive used in the manufacture of adhesive tape.
Thus, in accordance with the present invention there is provided a laminate comprising a translucent layer bonded to a substrate by a substantially opaque adhesive.
With such an arrangement, the need for a printed white layer is removed.
The laminate preferably bears an image, e.g. on the surface of the translucent layer facing the substrate, such as a printed image.
The adhesive is preferably in the form of a layer, since this enables an image on the translucent layer to be seen clearly by preventing the appearance of the underlying substrate.
The adhesive is preferably white, to enable an image to be perceived without coloration but could alternatively be colored.
The adhesive may advantageously use titanium dioxide, or other suitable whitening agent, as a filler, since such adhesives are commercially available. The adhesive is preferably a hot-melt 2 adhesive.
The substrate is preferably made from foam rubber, and the translucent layer is preferably made from PVC, polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate or any other synthetic material, or a translucent paper.
The laminate may be in the form of a mat, such as for a computer mouse.
The invention extends to a process for the manufacture of a laminate of the above type, the process comprising applying the substantially opaque adhesive to the translucent layer using a hot-melt process.
The process preferably further comprises the step of applying the substrate on to the adhesive during cooling of the adhesive.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a cross-section of a laminate in accordance with the preferred embodiment. The thicknesses of the layers are exaggerated for the sake of clarity.
The laminate is in the form of a mat for a computer mouse and consists of a translucent layer I made from PVC. On the underside of the PVC layer (as viewed in the drawing) there is printed an image, represented as a further layer 2, such as an advertisement for a company. Below the printed image there is a layer of white opaque adhesive 3 containing titanium dioxide or other suitable whitening agent as a filler, the adhesive layer 3 serving to bond the PVC layer I to an underlying substrate of foam rubber 4.
During manufacture of the mouse mat the opaque adhesive layer 3 is applied to the image side of the PVC layer I by a hot-melt process, and the foam rubber substrate 4 is then applied to the adhesive layer during the cooling thereof Whereas the present invention has been described with reference to the preferred embodiment in the form of a mat for a computer mouse, numerous other applications will be apparent to the skilled person. For example, the present invention could be applied to drinks coasters, table mats, counter mats, change mats and bar mats. Indeed, any laminate used in a retail or other commercial or domestic environment where a substrate is applied to a translucent layer could benefit from the present invention.
