Abstract
A heel support for a bedridden person is a cube of foam with a hole 1 through the centre and shaped to fit around the heel, with the back of the heel resting in the hole so as to take all the weight off the back of the heel, where ulcers and bed and pressure sores occur. It may have a stockinette cover and be machine washable. It can have four fixings 2 to hold it onto the heel and to stop it moving.
Description
1 2351024 H E E L S U P P 0 R T This invention relates to a washable
support for the heel of bedridden persons with pressure sores and ulcers on backs of heels to take the weight off the said pressure sore.
Pressure sores and ulcers occur when a very ill person lays with weight on one small area for a long time, the heel is one of the areas very prone to ulcers, they are very hard to heal and very painful, as the heel is always in contact with bedding and carries the weight of foot and leg, to allow the ulcer to heal they need a good blood supply which constant pressure stops, this invention is designed to remove the pressure and reinstate the patients normal blood supply.
The object of this invention is to lift the heel with an ulcer on off the bedding and support the foot by spreading the weight around the area of the ulcer to ankle and base of foot and away from the ulcer to allow the heel to get a blood supply thus to aid healing and cut down the pain of the ulcer in bedridden persons, also reduces the need of the nursing staff to keep changing the persons position The essential features of the invention is to have a hole through the centre of the support large enough to fit the heel giving the heel space so as not to touch the sides of the hole, and shaped around ankle and foot for comfort, high enough to lift heel with ulcer on off bedding, also easy fixing around ankle snap on, snap off, is soft and washable and is variable in size to fit any foot size or shape, adult to children The support is made of a foam cube but could have a firmer base, with foam on top half next to and around foot, it has a tubular stockinette cover with no seams to come into contact with foot or heel. The cover is fitted holding the top of stockinette at the base of support then feed bottom of stockinette up the centre of hole to cover inside of hole, over top and down the outsides of support to meet at base, and joined to bottom of stockinette in a seam around bottom outer edge of support so as to leave the hole in centre open. The outside edges could be round as long as it would still have the same degree of support and not allow the heel to come into contact with bedding. The suppport has 4 fixing straps one on each corner, a strap with valcro or sticky ends to attach to one another over foot and ankle.
12- The support will now be described by way of example with reference to accompanying drawing which:- Figure 1 shows base of the support with hole through centre Figure 2 shows front of the support with shaping around ankle plus fixing to hold support on to foot Figure 3 shows top of support shaping around ankle and foot plus fixing to hold support on to foot Figure 4 shows side with foot in place over centre hole and taking weight from heel and leaving a clearance under heel also fixed around ankle to keep in place (1) hole right through centre of support (2) snap on snap off fixing A to B / C to D or A to C / D to B (3) shaping for ankle The support is fitted on to the foot with the heel in the hole (1) and the ankle in the shaped cut out section (3) and secured by the four (2) fixing front right A over foot and attached to front lef t B, back right C over ankle and attached to back lef t D, or could be crossed over as front right A over ankle to back left D front left B over ankle to back right C.
1.- 0 CLAIMS
