Abstract

A product for a pet, useful for relieving boredom in a young or house-bound animal. There is a sphere 12 mounted for free rotation in a housing adapted to receive and retain a fluid material therein. Typically, the housing comprises a bowl 13 and a circularly apertured collar 11, the sphere 12 being mounted to project from the collar 11. In one embodiment, the collar 11 provides a circular aperture having a diameter less than that of the sphere 12 such that sphere 12 is held within the housing and rotatable in two degrees of freedom. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 3), the sphere 12 is mounted upon an axle held in opposing axle mountings provided on the under-surface of the collar, allowing rotation of the sphere in just one degree of freedom. In another aspect, the present invention also provides the use of the device as described above as a means for dispensing water or other fluids to an animal. Typically, the other fluids include flavoured water.

Description

2351000 ANIMAL DEVICE The present invention relates to an animal device,
typically being a product for a pet, in particular a device useful for relieving boredom in a young or house-bound animal.
In its broadest sense, the present invention provides an animal device comprising a sphere mounted for free rotation in a housing adapted to receive and retain a fluid material therein.
Typically, the housing comprises a bowl and a circularly apertured collar, the sphere being mounted to project from the collar.
In one embodiment, the collar provides a circular aperture having a diameter less than that of the sphere such that sphere held within the housing and rotatable in two degrees of freedom.
In an alternative embodiment, the sphere is mounted upon an axle held in opposing axle mountings provided on the under-surface of the collar, allowing rotation of the sphere in just one degree of freedom.
In another aspect, the present invention also provides the use of the device as described above as a means for dispensing water or other fluids to an animal. Typically, the other fluids include flavoured water.
The above and other aspects of the present invention will now be described in further detail. by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figures, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of an animal device in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is an exploded view of the embodiment of Figure 1, Figure 3 is an exploded view of a second embodiment of an animal device in accordance with the present invention.
2 Figures 1 and 2 show a preferred embodiment of the animal device of the present invention. The device 10 includes a dish 13 having a tightfitting or resiliently engagable lid 11. Lid 11 is circularly apertured to form a collar around a ball' 12 which, when inserted into the dish 13, projects through the collar by about one third.
Figure 3 shows an alternative arrangement 20 in which the ball 22 is mounted for rotation upon an axle 24, the ends of which axle 24 are received in mountings 23 formed on the underside of collar 21. The axle 24 may be formed integrally with the ball 22 or as a rod inserted into a central bore through the ball 22.
Typically, the components of the device are injection moulded from plastics materials and are designed and assembled in a manner conventional with such materials. The components may have to withstand rough treatment by the animal, especially dogs. Ideally, the ball 12,22 will be formed of a hard plastics or rubber material such that the animal will not be able to gain purchase on the ball with its teeth.
In use, water or a flavoured solution, such as beef or chicken flavoured water, is placed in the bowl 13 such that the ball 12,22 sits in the liquid. The animal can then take in the liquid by licking and rotating the ball.
It is envisaged that the present invention will find particular use in reducing boredom in animals left alone or confined in the house for any considerable length of time, and thus in reducing the likelihood that a pet, particularly a pet dog, will chew at or otherwise attack furniture. The device can be placed adjacent the most prone furniture and will detract the animal.
