Abstract

Apparatus suitable for holding a work-piece, made of a paramagnetic material, onto a magnetic chuck comprises means of generating a magnetic field around the work-piece such that it is magnetically attracted to the magnetic chuck. The apparatus may also be used for holding a work piece made of a ferrous metal. The means of generating a magnetic field around the work piece may involve inducing a direct current to flow through the said work piece. Electrodes may be mounted in the chuck such that they can induce such a direct current flow.

Description

2350933 Magnetic Chuck For Ferrous/Non-Ferrous Shterials.
This invention relates to a device that will egectMy hold not only magnetic but also non-magnetic materials by magnetic attraction. This will enable work to he earned out on the material without the use of clamps.
Currently magnetic workholding equipment can only hold ferrous materials such as steel and are of no use whatsoever for non-magnetic materials i.e. brass, aluminium, copper and stainless Is. Non-magnetic materials have to be clamped using conventional methods which can be inapropriate for machining applications.
The object of this invention is to provide a means of magnetically holding all magnetic and non-magnetic metals for mach grinding or handling without the use of conventional clamps and vices.
Accor, this invention provides a magnetic chuck with the means of holding non magnetic material such as brass, stainless steel and aluminium. The chuck incorporates electrodes that can pass an electric current through the workpeice and so generate a magnetic feild around it This generated magnetic feild becomes atracted to north and south poles of the magnetic chuck and so effec" holds the workpeice.
A prefiered embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accomp drawings in which:
Fig. 1 Shows an arrangement of magnetic poles and electrodes.
Fig.2 Shows a typical workpeice in place on the poles and electrodes Fig.3 Shows the principal of the inverition and the magnetic force holding the woikpeice.
Fig.4 Shows alternative electrode arrangement.
2 As shown in figure 1. the chuck consists of steel magnetic poles in the top surface embodied with our concept of using elctrodes. The magnetic poles haw the ability to be magnetised and dernagnetised by the use of elctromagnets or permanent magnets. The electrodes which can be made of steel or other conducting material can be supplied with a variable voltage.
Figure 2. shows a side view of the chuck with a typical workpeice in position on its surface spanning at least two electrodes and a number of magnetic poles.
Figure 3. shows the main principle of our invention where a generated magnetic flux is attracted to the magnetised poles on the chuck surface. Our concept can be built directly into the chuck by me^ of electrodes. These need to be closely spaced to allow small workpeices to span alleast two electrodes as shown in Fig. 2. Altema" our concept can be used with some convetional chucks already m the market place by means of a seperate control box compricisng two electrodes which can be placed on either side of the workpeice as shown in fig. 4.
Proccedure.
The surface of the chuck is cleaned to ensure good contact with the electrodes and magnetic poles. The paramagnetic workpeice is placed on the surface of the chuck spanning as many of the poles and electrodes as possible. The magnetic poles are then energised to provide a series of magnetic flux loops on the surface of the chuck. Now the electrodes are supplied with a current which will flow through the woce and generate a magnetic field around it. This magnetic field is attracted to the magnetic poles and egee" clamps it to the surface of the chuck as shown in fig 3.
