Abstract

A pipe or cable protection device comprises a hollow sleeve 8 adapted to pass through a wall or floor of a structure, eg a building or caravan, having a flange 10 at one end, and means for retaining the sleeve in position with respect to the structure. The pipe or cable 6 may be a close fit within the hollow sleeve (see fig 1). Preferably a disc member 16 having a centrally disposed flexible area of triangular flaps 22, formed by slits 20, is provided which is adapted to pass between the wall of the sleeve and the pipe or cable as it passes through the sleeve. The disc member may be made from sheet rubber or nylon, and may be fixed to the flange by means of adhesive, or clamped between a retaining disc 24 and the flange of the sleeve using screws 14.

Description

2350872 A PROTECTIVE SLEEVE This invention relates to a protective sleeve
and is particularly concerned with such a sleeve for use in a construction such as a building or caravan to protect an insert passing through a wall or floor thereof. The insert may be, for example, a pipe or cable which may otherwise suffer damage due to movement in the wall or floor due to expansion or contraction of the building materials.
The object of the invention is to provide a protective sleeve which provides protection to an inserted element, e.g. a pipe or cable which passes through a hole formed in a wall or floor of a building or caravan.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a sleeve having a flange at one end thereof and adapted to locate within a hole formed in the wall or floor of a structure.
The flange may be formed with at least one hole to receive means by which the sleeve may be secured to the wall or floor of the structure.
The sleeve and the flange may be circular in form or may be of any other shape.
In one form the sleeve may be of such a size to allow a pipe to pass engagingly therethrough or alternatively to allow the pipe to pass freely therethrough.
In a further form the flange may be provided with a resilient washer so formed to allow a pipe of lesser diameter than the sleeve to be axially located within the sleeve.
The washer may be attached to the flange, e.g. by adhesive, or may be part of a secondary flange secured to the flange of the sleeve.
There will now follow a description of various embodiments of the invention, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a section view through a wall showing a pipe passing through the wall and protected by means of a sleeve according to one form of the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view from the side of a sleeve according to one form of the invention; Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but of a second embodiment; Figure 4 is an exploded view of an assembly according to the second embodiment; Figure 5 is an end view of a centralising disc used in the second embodiment.
As seen in Figures 1 and 2 a wall 2 of a building or structure is formed with a through bore 4 and a pipe or cable 6 passes through the wall via the bore into the interior of the building.
In order to protect the pipe or cable from any damage due to movement of the wall there is provided a sleeve 8 having a hole 9 and flange 10 which is formed with holes 12 and a pair of retaining screws 14 pass through those holes to be screwed into the wall 2. The pipe or cable 6 may typically be a close fit within the hollow sleeve in this arrangement.
However, in the arrangement seen in Figures 3 and 4, the pipe or cable 6 is of a rather smaller diameter than that of the bore 9. In order to retain the pipe reasonably centrally within the sleeve, there is provided a centralising disc 16 which is formed with a readily deformable central area 18 by means of several slits 20 to create triangular flaps 22 which, on assembly of the pipe or cable, fold inwardly therebetween in relation to the bore 9.
The centralising disc 16 is maintained in position relative to the flange 10 by means of a recessed disc 24 which fits over the disc 16 and secured by the screws 14 which pass through holes 26 in the disc 24 and then through further holes 28 in the centralising disc 16 and the holes 12 in the flange 10 and are then screwed into the wall 2.
The centralising disc 16 may preferably be made from sheet rubber or nylon and may, if so desired, be affixed to the flange 10 by a suitable adhesive, in which case the retaining recessed disc may not be required.
Although the invention has been described in relation to a pipe or cable passing transversely through a wall of a building, it could readily apply to a passage in any other direction e.g. upwardly through a floor which is often the case in respect of a caravan.
Reference to a wall or floor in a structure includes a wall which may or may not have a cavity therein.

Claims (7)

1 A pipe or cable protection device comprising a hollow sleeve having a flange at one end thereof and adapted to pass through a wall or floor of a structure and having means for retaining the sleeve in position with respect to the structure.
2. A device according to Claim 1 wherein there is further provided a disc member having a centrally disposed flexible area adapted to pass upwardly between a wall of the sleeve and a pipe or cable as it passes through the sleeve.
3. A device according to Claim 2 where the disc member is affixed to the flange by means of an adhesive.
4. A device according to Claim 2 where the disc member is retained in position by means of a retaining disc, clamping the disc between the retaining disc and the flange.
5. A device according to Claim 4 where in the clamping disc is secured with the flange of the sleeve by means of screws which are screwed into the wall or floor of the structure.
6. A device according to any of the above claims substantiate as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A structure being provided with a device according to any of the above claims.
