Abstract

235,066. Grant, C. de V., and Williams, Sir W. W. Oct. 8, 1924. Recovering fats and oils from waste waters. - Oil, petrol, grease, and the like are recovered from bilge water or other waste liquid by flowing the liquid through a vessel 1 fitted with a strainer 7, and then into a separator 8 fitted with means such as a strainer 10 for steadying the flow of liquid and with means, such as a removable slotted plate 13 with downwardly-extending flanges 15, for maintaining the liquid steady, the oil rising to the surface being removed by a gutter 18 provided with an adjustable side 20 to determine the liquid level. The water passes beneath a partition 17 t'o the outlet 9, and before being discharged it is preferably passed through a tank 24 fitted with a perforated plate 28 and a filter 25 of pebbles or charcoal lumps. There may be provided a removable perforated basket 4 to collect foreign bodies of large size, an adjustably weighted hinged flap 12 with a curved lower edge adapted to spread fanwise the liquid entering the vessel 8, a second gutter 22 for discharging oil, a perforated partition 23, valved sludge outlets 3, 16, 27, a steam coil in and a jacket about the vessel 8 for heating the contents, anti-splash plates in the. vessel 8 and depending from the covers of the various vessels, means for suspending the complete apparatus as a unit on board ship for example, and a float and pulley arrangement for automatically adjusting the side 20 of the gutter 18.
