Abstract

A door threshold assembly comprises a sill or base strip adapted to be fixed to the floor [11] across a door opening, and a threshold strip [13] that is mounted over the sill or base strip. The sill or base strip and threshold strip [13] have inter-engaging parts [14,15,16,17] which provide a snap fit of the threshold strip [13] onto the sill or base strip. The threshold strip [13] may incorporate a ramp [20], a thermal break strip [21] and holes permitting the escape of water to the exterior of the door. The threshold strip [13] may also incorporate slots [22,23] which are adapted to receive sealing strips.

2350144 i THIS INVENTION concerns a door threshold assembly of the kind

comprising a sill or base strip adapted to be bonded or attached by fixing means and/or mastic to a floor surface across a door opening and to receive a threshold strip to be mounted over the sill or base strip, onto which the door closes to provide a weatherproof seal.

In conventional threshold assemblies the threshold strip itself is usually screwed down onto the sill or base strip or alternatively fixed onto the side door frame members using brackets, screws or lugs, or alternatively simply screwed down directly onto the floor.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a door threshold assembly which avoids the need for screw fixing of the threshold and thus avoids the need for screwing down through a dampproof membrane or sealing mastic with the attendant risk of permitting ingress of moisture.

According to the present invention a door threshold assembly comprises a sill or base strip adapted to be bonded or attached by fixing means -2and/or mastic to a floor surface across a door opening, and a threshold strip to be mounted over the sill or base strip across the door opening; characterised in that the sill or base strip and the threshold have interengaging parts providing a resistance fit of the threshold onto the sill or base strip.

Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a door threshold assembly made in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a further embodiment including an outer ramp surface against which the door may close.

In Fig. I there can be seen a sill or base strip 10 which may be screwed or fixed with mastic to the floor 11 and may form the bottom or invert member of a rectangular door frame.

Conventionally, a threshold generally of the type illustrated at 13 would need to be screwed down through the sill into the floor or alternatively -3screwed laterally into the side frame members, or again, fixed to the side frame members with lugs or brackets.

In accordance with the present invention the sill or base 10 has a receptor 14, and the threshold has co-operating protrusion 16 which is received by the receptor 14 in interengaging manner as can be seen in Fig. 1. Thus, installation of the threshold is by passing it outwardly in the direction of arrow 18 to effect a resistance fit or snap fit and until the interengaging parts are firmly attached whereupon the threshold may not be withdrawn from the sill other than by applying considerable force or a special tool.

Therefore, in assembly, with the sill or base strip 10 pre-fitted to the door opening either alone or as part of a rectangular door frame, the threshold 13 is readily installed on site without the need for drilling and screwing down into the sill or floor. Thus, the mastic base beneath the sill 10 is not disturbed.

Referring now to Fig. 2, where it is required to provide a non-slip ramp this is shown at 20 and is integrally formed with the threshold 13. The complete formation of threshold and ramp is introduced as a push-fit in a -4similar manner. In this case a further receptor 15 is provided on the sill 10 and a further co-operating protrusion 17 on the threshold.

If required, a thermal break 21 may be provided in the threshold to avoid condensation.

In conventional manner, slots 22, 23 and 24 are provided for receiving sealing strips for draught and water proofing.

Drain holes will be provided as is customary in such thresholds.

The protrusions 16 and 17 and receptors 14 and 15 are concealed beneath the threshold 13 thus to be inaccessible after installation.

Claims

1. A door threshold assembly comprising a sill or base strip adapted to be bonded or attached by fixing means and/or mastic to a floor surface across a door opening, and a threshold strip to be mounted over the sill or base strip across the door opening; characterised in that the sill or base strip and the threshold have interengaging parts providing a resistance fit of the threshold onto the sill or base strip.

A door threshold assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the interengaging parts include one or more receptors and protrusions provided on and co-operating between the sill or base and the threshold strip, the parts being interengaged by passing the threshold strip laterally across the base strip until the interengaging parts are firmly attached preventing withdrawal of the threshold strip from the sill or base.

3. A door threshold assembly according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the sill or base is adapted to be fixed to the floor thus to form the bottom or invert member of a rectangular door frame.

4. A door threshold assembly according to any preceding claim, including a ramp forming an outer extension of the threshold strip and similarly cooperating with the sill or base strip by means of interengaging parts providing a push fit of the ramp onto the sill or base strip.

5. A door threshold assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the threshold strip includes a thermal break strip.

6. A door threshold assembly according to any preceding claim, including at least one slot adapted to receive a sealing strip for draught/waterproofing.

7. A door threshold assembly wherein the threshold strip includes drain holes permitting escape of water to the exterior of the door.

8. A door threshold assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the interengaging parts of the sill or base and the threshold strip are concealed beneath the threshold strip.
