Abstract

A strap tensioning device has two slotted bars 5 located in a frame 1 and are turned by worm and wheel gears 2. A nut 4 is located on the end of the worm shaft and when this is rotated the slotted bars contrarotate. A strap placed around an object with the strap ends in the bar slots will tighten around the object when the nut is rotated and the strap ends are rolled up on the bars.

Description

2349911 STRAP TENSIONING DEVICE This invention relates to a device for
providing tension to both ends of a strap sinTaltaneously to clamp the strap around an object.
To clamp a strap of metal or synthetic material under tension, around an object such as a pipe, the tension is best applied to both ends of the strap simultaneously. This tension can be provided by rolling the strap around bars turned by worm and wheel gearing This patent application describes a device to do this.
The invention can be used as a pipe clamp or pulling device, According to the present invention there is provided a strap tensioning device comprising a frame holding two slotted bars of circular cross section, each bar being fitted with a gear wheel driven by a corwon worm gear such that when the worm is turned the bars contrarotate and roll up the ends of a strap whose ends are slotted into the bars. An extension of the worm shaft would be square or hexagonal in cross section and arranged so that the worm can be turned with a socket wrench. Optionally the worm shaft could be driven by an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic motor.
The strap would be made of any material which allowed the straps to be rolled around the bars such as malleable metal or synthetic material.
2 Although the invention is described for use with straps, the straps could be replaced with wire rope and the slots could be replaced with holes to take the ends of the wire.
A specific entodin-ent of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accoying drawing in whichFigure 1 shows the end view of the device with the worm and wheel gears. Figure 2 shows the top view of the device and the slots in the bars. Figure 3 shows the device with a strap installed and cl around a pipe.
Referring to the drawing the device consists of a fraiw 1 with two round bars 5 located in bearings 10 in the frarre. Slots 6 are milled through the bars to allow the ends of a strap to be pushed through the bars.
A gear wheel 2 is fixed to the end of each bar and the gears mesh with a worm gear 3 the shaft of which is located in bearings in the frame. An hexagonal nut 4 is fixed to one end of the worm gear shaft so that when the nut is turned the worm rotates and the slotted bars 5 rotate in opposite directions.
When the ends of a strap are pushed through the slots 6 and the nut 4 is turned, the strap ends will roll around the bars and therefore shorten the strap, If the strap is located around an object the strap will tighten when the nut is turned and the strap ends roll around the bars.
Figure 3 shows the ccuiplete device 7 with a strap 8 fitted to the device and cl around a pipe 9.
