Abstract

There is disclosed a phlebotomy set comprising a barrel 10 having an open top 11 and closed base 12 through which a hypodermic needle 14 sharpened at both ends extends and a protective cover 16 of flexible material enclosing that part of the needle located within the barrel, characterised in that the protective cover is transparent.

Description

2349823 PHLEBOTOMY SET This invention concerns a phlebotomy set of the
kind (hereinafter termed "of the kind referred to") comprising a barrel having an open top and closed base through which a hypodermic needle sharpened at both ends extends and a protective cover of flexible material enclosing that part of the needle located within the barrel.
The use of a phlebotomy set of the kind referred to requires insertion of the forward end of the needle into a vein of the patient and introduction of an evacuated collecting bottle sealed by a stopper at its forward end to the barrel. 'Re bottle is pushed against the rear end of the needle which penetrates the cover and stopper at the same time collapsing the cover. Blood is then drawn by vacuum from the vein and through the needle to fill the bottle.
Proper insertion of the needle into the vein requires considerable skill first in targeting the vein accurately and second in ensuring that the needle does not pass completely through the vein.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a phlebotomy set of the kind referred to which facilitates an operator to be sure when the needle is properly inserted.
According to the present invention there is provided a phlebotomy set of the kind referred to characterised in that the protective cover is transparent.
With a transparent cover blood will be visible emerging from the rear end of the needle as the needle properly targets a vein, at the same time signalling to the operator that the needle should not be further advanced.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, one form of phlebotomy set embodying same.
Of the drawings:- Figures 1-3 show cross-sectional views through the set at successive stages of its use.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, it will be seen that the set comprises a barrel 10 having an open top 11 and closed base 12 into which is screwed a hub 13 through which a hypodermic needle 14 sharpened at both ends passes. The forward end of the needle 14 is protected until required for use by a pull-off sheath 15 which fits over the forward end of the hub 13.
The rear end of the needle 14 within the barrel 10 is protected by a transparent cover 16 of flexible elastomeric material.
In use, and as shown in Figure 2, the sheath 15 is discarded and the forward end of the needle 14 inserted into a vein V of the patient. Emergence of blood from the rear end of the needle is visible within the cover 16 indicating to the operator proper targeting of the vein V and signalling that the needle should not be advanced further.
As shown in Figure 3, a vacuum collecting bottle 20 sealed at its forward end by a stopper 2 1 is pushed into the barrel 10. The rear end of the needle 14 penetrates the cover 16 and stopper 21 at the same time collapsing the cover 16 to locate in a recess 22 on the forward face of the stopper 2 1. Blood is then drawn by vacuum from the vein V and through the needle 14 to fill the bottle 20.
When full, the bottle 20 is removed, the cover 16 uncollapses over the rear tip of the needle 14 and reseals to prevent further blood flow until next bottle is used or phlebotomy set is withdrawn from the patient.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
