Abstract

A joist hanger 1 which has a hinged base 2 allowing the joist to be offered into position from below the joist hanger and therefore not requiring any part of the building structure above the joist to be disturbed. The hinged base 2 is secured into position with the pin 3 which is held captive when the joist is in place by a locking device.

Description

JOIST HANGER The invention relates to a joist hanger used for supporting floor or roof joists.
Joist hangers are fixed to supporting walls at each point where a joist is to be installed.
To install the joist into the joist hanger it must be lowered into position from above the joist hanger. This therefore must be carried out prior to the construction of the floor or roof which the joist will support.
Where there is an existing floor or roof and the joist needs to be replaced or additional joists installed the existing floor or roof must be removed. This can be expensive, causes additional disruption to any occupants and results in the reconstruction of parts of the building structure which may be sound in themselves.
Accordingly this invention provides a joist hanger with a hinged base allowing the joist to be offered into position from below the joist hanger and therefore not requiring any part of the building structure above the joist to be disturbed.
Preferably the hinged joist hanger is made of metal and if necessary have a suitable protective coating.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows the hinged joist hanger in perspective with the joist being offered up into position.
FIGURE 2 shows the hinged joist hanger in front elevation FIGURE 3 shows the hinged joist hanger in side elevation.
Referring to the drawing the hinged joist hanger comprises of a body I having a base 2 hinged on one side and a pin 3 for locking the base in the shut position with a locking device to hold the pin captive when assemble.
The hanger 1 is installed into position on the wall with the hinged base 2 open as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The joist 5 is offered into position from below the joist hanger as illustrated in Figure 1. While the joist is temporarily supported the hinged base 2 is swung shut 6 and secured using the pin 3. When the pin is fully inserted it is held captive by the locking device 4 as shown in Figure 3 which stops the pin being removed when the joist is in place. The temporary support of the joist can then be removed and the hinged joist hanger supports the joist.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A joist hanger comprising of a hinged base allowing the joist to be offered into position from below the joist hanger.
  2. 2. A joist hanger as claimed in Claim 1 where the hinged base is secured in position by a pin after the joist is in place.
  3. 3. A joist hanger as claimed in Claim 2 where the pin is held captive using a locking device in the hinged base.
  4. 4. A joist hanger substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
