Abstract
The cycle has a frame suspended from a monorail and two or more wheels, one of which is operated by a pedal crank. One or more seats are provided. The forks retaining the wheels prevent the cycle from falling off the monorail if the wheels derail.
Description
SUSPENDED CYCLE SYSTEM
This invention relates to a pedal-driven cycle which travels underneath a tubular steel track, 1" dia. The track is suspended from ground about 7 feet high on wooden stanchions 3"dia., each 12 feet apart.
Traditional bicycles are a environment friendly form of personal transport but they have certain drawbacks, losing stability owing to balance of very small tyre contact with ground, skidding and lack of attention to steering.
The usual position for the rider is to sit with the legs downwards on the pedals.
The present invention sits the rider with the legs outstretched-semi-recumbent. This has proved to be more efficient, as the back muscles are used as well as the leg muscles.
The cycle frame is four sides, made from normal bicycle tubing. Two small (9") cycle wheels are fixed to top bar. No tyres or tubes are used. But there are rubber inserts in wheel rim for traction or grip.
The vee section of rims sit astride the tubular track. Riders weight keeps machine secure on track. The front wheel is self-steering and is driven by chain or shaft from pedals.
The wheel forks are unique in that they serve three functions :- wheel fixing, open at one side to allow lifting of M/C off and on track easily and, the open ends are extextened to below bottom of wheel, so in the event of a derailment, the M/C will not crash to the ground. The wheel is captured safely. Seat is adjustable for different leg lengths. A two seat version is envisaged, using 3 wheels in tandem, riders facing each other and both having their feet on one central crank to middle wheel.
Claims (2)
- CLAIMS 1. The forks in that they have three functions :- wheel fixing, safety in event of derailment and lifting cycle from track. t
- 2. A method and solution of attracting visitors to a tourist area where too many walkers are damaging ground e. g. Roman-wall and Lake District and building a cycle path is undesirable.
