Abstract

A levelling device for a ladder includes two body sections (1, 2) where one body section is secured to the other by bolts (3, 4) and the device is moveably secured to the ladder by bolts (5,6). The device has an adjustable foot (9), made from rubber and fitted to the bottom of an extension leg (7), may swivel relative to the extension leg.. The device may be fitted to one or both ladder legs and to new or existing ladders. The device may also include a spirit level (8).

Description

Adjustable Extention Ladder Leg This invention relates to an adjustable extention ladder leg.
Standard ladders are well known used commercially or domestically enabling the user to mount it to reach areas normally out of reach. The two legs of the ladder are equal in length so that the ladder remains perpendicular on flat horizontal surfaces rendering the ladder safe to mount. Uneven, sloping or stepped surfaces render the ladder unsafe for mounting. According to the present invention this adjustable extention ladder leg when attached to either leg of the ladder (externally or internally adapted) it will slide up or down the ladder leg so as to lengthen or shorten one side. This ensures that the ladder in use remains perpendicular and safe during use on an uneven horizontal surface, be it sloping or a stepped surface. A rubber swivel foot which inclines to match any slope renders, through adjusting, the ladder safe and secure. This invention can be incorporated into newly manufactured ladder legs so adjustment to each leg can be made to render the ladder safe on uneven sloping or stepped surfaces.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure I shows in perspective the extention ladder leg with its swivel rubber foot which is able to adjust in length and to any inclined footing.
Figure 2 shows a standard ladder with one leg resting on a step and the other suspended the extention ladder leg has been secured in a position to render the ladder perpendicular and safe for mounting.
Figure 3 shows the adjustable extention ladder leg attached to a standard ladder which is being used on an uneven sloping surface the extention leg secures the perpendicular position of the ladder as well as the adjustable swivel rubber foot takes up the angle of the uneven surface.
Figure 4 shows an exploded view of the adjustable extention ladder leg. Its securing system and adjustable swivel rubber foot.
Referring to the drawings, the extention ladder leg consists of two overlapping moveable sections body 1 and 2, reasonably secured to each (by holding bolts 3,4,5 and 6) other for adjusting the width and depth of the unit, fitting any ladder design, by for example a bolt, wing nut or similar means at points 3 and 4. Wing nut bolts with swivel rubber covered plates at 5 and 6, or similar securing levers, secures the desired position of the extention leg 7 on the ladder at the lower end of the extention leg 7 is an adjustable swivel rubber foot at 9. By sliding and position the extention leg body higher up the ladder side, it will not interfere with the ladder use on normal horizontal surfaces.
In order to fit or remove the extention leg body from either leg of the ladder, the bolts, wing nuts or similar securing levers at 5 and 6 can be loosened and the body 1 and 2 then slides off the bottom of the ladder to which it has been attached as shown in Fig 2.
In order to secure the perpendicular position of standard ladder, be it on a stepped, sloping or uneven surface, the extension leg 7 slides up and down to secure an approximate position of correct length by securing the body I and 2 to the ladder by wing nuts or similar levers at stand 6, fine adjustment for correct perpendicular position is done by checking the spirit level bubble at 8 and by fine tuning the length by adjusting the swivel rubber foot at 9.

Claims (8)

  1. CLAIMS 1 TO 8 1. An adjustable extention leg comprising of two sliding sections to form a securing body around (or internally) one or both ladder legs. The body being adapted to slide up or down either ladder leg so as to lengthen or shorten one side to make the ladder safe and secure perpendicular for mounting on an uneven, sloping or stepped surface. An adjustable swivel rubber foot at the base of the extention leg helps to fine tune the perpendicular position of the ladder on any type or surface.
  2. 2. An adjustable extention leg is claimed in 1 and 2 in any form of design to lengthen or shorten either or both legs of an existing or newly manufactured ladder, to make it safe and secure for mounting on sloping, uneven or stepped surfaces.
  3. 3. An adjustable extention leg is claimed in 2 where a catchment means is proved to arrest the sliding up and down of the body thus securing the correct disired position for the required length of the ladderto render the ladder stable and safe for mounting on sloping, uneven or stepped surfaces.
  4. 4. An adjustable extention leg as claimed in 1 and 2 has an adjustable swivel rubber foot for fine tuning any sloping angle and securing the perpendicular position of the ladder on any sloping, uneven or stepped surface.
  5. 5. An adjustable extention leg as claimed in 4 has a common spirit level bubble to fine tune the perpendicular position of the ladder to which the extention leg is attached.
  6. 6. An adjustable extention leg as claimed in 3 can be fitted to either or both legs of a standard ladder.
  7. 7. An adjustable extention leg as claimed in 3 can be fitted to one or both legs of a newly manufactured ladder depending on design sliding externally or internally and being secured to the ladder leg by a fastening device to maintain the ladder in a perpendicular and secure position.
  8. 8. An adjustable eOxtention leg substantially as described here on with reference to figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawings.
