Abstract
A multifunctional drawing instrument or set square (1) , constructed in one piece and comprising a 45{ set square section with an elongate section (8, 9), an angle gauge (19, 20) being provided within the set square (1) for the measurement of angles, there also being provided holes at intervals along the elongate section (8, 9) to enable a pencil or similar marking tool to be placed through one of the holes and a bradawl or similar through another of the holes to act as a pivot so that circular arcs may be drawn. The set square (1) is of substantially 'L' shaped cross section and may be used as a guide for cutting.
Description
SET SQUARE
This invention relates to a setsquare.
A set square is a well-known instrument for the use of drawing or testing of right angles and for the drawing of vertical lines. A moveable square, known as a bevel square is available ; it is a rule with an adjustable arm, used to measure or mark angles or to fix a surface at one angle. If you were to draw or mark, circles or circular arcs, you would need to use, a V-shaped device, called a compass, while measuring length or for the drawing of straight lines, requires the use of a straight edged strip of wood or metal, called a ruler. While cutting, to regulate the motion of ones hand, would require the use of a guide. To measure or construct angles, you could use a semicircular instrument, called a protractor.
You may require the use of all these devices, to carry out one job, therefore, six different tools, six different prices, more expense.
According to the present inventions, the bevel square and the compas, are adjustable, therefore they both have movable parts. Providing, you have these tools, most jobs that entail the need of, drawing or finding angles, the drawing or marking of circles or circular arcs, should be accomplished.
The object of this invention is to provide a setsquare. Which allows you to draw, measure, mark, set out or find angles, for the marking or drawing of circles or circular arcs, to draw or mark right angles, to fix a surface at a certain angle, and be able to mark or measure straight lines.
Accordingly this invention provides a set square, wherein means are provided on the body of the set square for the marking, drawing or finding of different angles, circles or circular arcs. Measuring or for the marking of straight lines, or for the marking or drawing of right angles or using the setsquare as a guide.
The setsquare being of one-piece construction, where there are no movable parts.
Preferably the setsquare is made of metal, but may instead, be of plastic construction as a cheaper alternative.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings which
Figure 1 Shows an overall view of the set square.
Figure 2 Shows a rear view of the set square.
Figure 3 Shows the set square in position, when marking or drawing of
A right angle, in one movement.
Figure 4 Shows the set square from above, along its back.
Figure 5 Illustrates how the set square would be positioned, in the drawing,
Or marking of a circle or circular arc.
Figure 6 Illustrates how the set square would be positioned, for the finding
Drawing, marking or fixing of a surface at a single angle.
Figure 7 shows how the set square would be used as a guide.
As shown in figure 1, the set square is of one-piece construction. The body 1, is of right angle design, there are no movable parts on the set square. The angles of cut, on edges, 10 and 11, enable the set square to sit firmly at the correct position, as shown in figure 3, this allows the setting out of the required angles, for the marking or drawing of a right angle, in one movement. These angles of cut on edges, 10 and 11 allows the set square to sit firmly, without rocking; therefore it can also be used as a guide for cutting, as in figure 7. Edges 2 and 3 are cut at a 45-degree angle, allowing the set square to mark these angles or cut along them as a guide.
Figure 2, shows an enlarged view of the rear of the set square, which shows a special gauge 17, for the marking of architrave around a doorframe 2 slots, 4 and 5, as shown in figure 1, are used for the finding of an angle. There is a centre line 18, which runs from edge 7, through the centre of slot 4, through edge 13, through slot 5, and to a finish at edge 6. Radiating from the centre mark, where 13 meets 18, outwards to edges 6 and 7, are lines, at angles, through 180 degrees. Therefore any angle can be found, marked or drawn, using the angle gauge 19 and 20, and edges 10 or 11, to mark or set out the correct angle, as shown in figure 6. These radiating lines are on both inside and outside of faces 12 and 14, giving four markable faces. The outside faces can be seen in figure 4.
Figure 5, illustrates how the set square would be used for the marking or drawing of circles or circular arcs. There are holes on sides, 8 and 9, rows A and B, which allow the use of a marking tool, such as a pencil C, and a point, such as, a bradawl, pin or tack D, to be positioned as in figure 5, enabling the arc or circle to be struck. The holes, rows A and B, are at a pre-determined measurement; the combination this gives would be numerous.
