Abstract
An aid for use in facilitating exit from a motor vehicle includes a first part (10) which is shaped so that it can be fitted releasably in a U-shaped door latch striker of the vehicle when the respective door of the vehicle is open, and a second part (11) in the form of a handle which engages into the first part to project outwardly of the vehicle and be grasped manually to support a person getting out of the vehicle.
Description
AIDS FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to aids for use in motor vehicles and its objects include the provision of an improved form of aid for use in facilitating exit from a motor vehicle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved method of facilitating exit from a motor vehicle.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an aid for use in facilitating exit from a motor vehicle, said aid including a first part which is releasably engageable with a door latch striker of the vehicle when the respective door is open, and a second part which can be grasped manually to support a person getting out of the vehicle.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of facilitating exit from a motor vehicle, said method comprising:
a) providing an aid as defined above,
b) opening a door of the vehicle, and
c) engaging the first part of the aid with the respective door
latch striker so that a person getting out of the vehicle can
grasp the second part of the aid.
The aid may be of unitary construction, with the first and second parts thereof constituted by a single fabrication of appropriate configuration.
Preferably, however, the first part of the aid is shaped for fitment in the recess afforded by a U-shaped door latch striker and the second part of the aid is connected to the first part by means of a releasable fastener, e. g. a screw having an Allen socket head.
The method of connection of the first and second parts is then preferably such that they can be connected together in two relative positions so that the parts of the aid can be connected together in one way, for use of the aid on one side of the vehicle, and
connected together in the other way, for use of the aid on the other
side of the vehicle.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a front view of a first part of the aid,
Figure 2 is a side view of the first part of the aid,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the first part of the aid,
Figure 4 is a side view of a second part of the aid, and
Figure 5 is a section along the line A-A of Figure 4.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The aid of the present invention comprises two parts, namely a handgrip block 10 shown in Figures 1 to 3 and a handgrip handle 11 shown in Figures 4 and 5. The two parts are fastened together using an M6 lock screw (not shown) having an Allen socket head.
The handgrip block 10 includes a main body 12 of such configuration that it is a close sliding fit within the confines of a Ushaped door latch striker. Different vehicle manufacturers use strikers of different configurations and the"X"and"Y"dimensions indicated in Figures 1 and 3 will depend on the latch striker dimensions.
The main body 12 includes a throughbore 13 and a transverse bore 14, the transverse bore 14 being formed in an enlarged part 15 of the main body, which enlarged part is of such dimensions that it will not fit inside the door latch striker, but rests on the door latch striker. The transverse bore 14 is designed to receive the M6 locking screw.
The handgrip handle 11 is formed from a steel bar bent to the configuration shown in the drawings and has a first end portion 15 which is a close fit in the throughbore 13 of the main body 12. Once fitted in the throughbore 13, end portion 13 can then be held in position by tightening the M6 locking screw. The first end portion 15 of the handgrip handle 11 is connected by a bend 16 to an intermediate, generally horizontal portion 17 which, in turn, is connected by a bend 18 to a portion 19 which, in use, extends downwardly. The downwardly extending portion 19 is connected by a bend 20 to the main operative portion 21 of the handle 11, i. e. the part which will be grasped manually by the user of the aid. The main operative portion 21 then terminates in an up-standing end portion 22 which serves to prevent the user's hand from slipping off said operative portion 21.
The orientation of the first end portion 15 within the bore 13 will depend on the direction in which the main operative portion 21 should extend when the handgrip block 10 is fitted in the door latch striker. Thus, the first end portion 15 will be in one angular position within the bore 13 if the aid is to be used on the nearside of the vehicle and will be in another angular position within the bore 13 if the aid is to be used on the offside of the vehicle.
The aid will thus typically be kept in the glove compartment of the vehicle or in the storage compartment in the relevant vehicle door and, when the person concerned wishes to use the aid, he or she will first open the vehicle door, or have it opened for him or her.
The handgrip block 10 will then be inserted in the door latch striker with the operative portion 21 of the handgrip handle 11 extending outwardly of the vehicle so as to provide a hand support position outside the normal confines of the vehicle so that the user can rest a part of his or her weight on the handle 11 while getting out of the vehicle.
Once the person using the aid has exited from the vehicle, the aid will be lifted upwardly so that the handgrip block 10 is disengaged from the door latch striker and the aid will be put back into its storage location.
Claims (6)
1. An aid for use in facilitating exit from a motor vehicle, said aid including a first part which is releasably engageable with a door latch striker of the vehicle when the respective door is open, and a second part which can be grasped manually to support a person getting out of the vehicle.
2. An aid as claimed in Claim 1, in which the second part of the aid is formed from a steel bar.
3. An aid as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the second part of the aid is connected to the first part of the aid by means of a releasable fastener.
4. An aid as claimed in Claim 3, in which the method of connection of the first and second parts is such that they can be connected together in two relative positions so that the parts of the aid can be connected together in one way, for use of the aid on one side of the vehicle, and connected together in the other way, for use of the aid on the other side of the vehicle.
5. An aid as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the configurations of the two parts of the aid are substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
6. A method of facilitating exit from a motor vehicle, said method comprising:
a) providing an aid as claimed in any one of the preceding claims,
b) opening a door of the vehicle, and
c) engaging the first part of the aid with the respective door latch striker so that a person getting out of the vehicle can grasp the second part of the aid.
