Abstract

The vehicle message display unit contains an electronically illuminated display, Fig. 1, which allows the driver of the vehicle to send short visually displayed messages to other road-users. The display 1 may be located on either the front or rear windscreen of the vehicle, or both. It is activated by either depressing the brake pedal, or selecting a button on the remote control supplied 4. The unit is provided with a fully adjustable profile 2 to suit any windscreen; is programmable in any language using the keyboard provided 5 and derives its power from the vehicle battery 3. It is quick and easy to install and requires no maintenance.

Description

Vehicle Message Display Unit This invention relates to an electronic LED vehicle message display unit.
Presently, due to the phenomenal expansion of mobile phone technology we can speak to people on the other side of the world while driving, yet we cannot communicate with the driver behind us, to say for example, that he is too close, or that we have children on board. The vehicle message display unit (M. D. U.) is a simple and inexpensive solution to this problem. It is also a natural progression of electronic communication technology for the message-orientated society we live in today. We receive messages on our mobiles, pagers and telephone answering machines. The time is right for a device, which will allow drivers to send short, visually displayed messages, to other road-users.
According to the present invention there is provided a fully programmable electronically illuminated display unit, contained in a protective box, whose profile may be altered to follow the curvature and angle of the vehicle windscreen. The display unit is glued to either the front or rear windscreen of the vehicle and power is provided from the vehicle battery. For use on the front windscreen, the displayed message appears in reverse, in order that the driver in front can understand the message, when reading it, in his/her mirror.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows a perspective of the vehicle message display unit with an adjustable profile to follow the angle and curvature of the windscreen.
Figures 2,3 show the front and side elevation of the unit.
Figures 4,5 show the positions of the vehicle message display unit in the rear of the vehicle.
Figure 6 shows the position of the vehicle message display unit in the front of the vehicle.
Referring to the drawings the M. D. U consists of a protective box containing an electronically illuminated display and the necessary electronics required for normal function 1. The front of the unit is provided with an adjustable profile 2, to follow the angle and curvature of the vehicle windscreen. The unit is secured to the windscreen by means of a strong adhesive. Power is supplied directly from the vehicle battery 3. Operation is achieved, by either depressing the brake pedal, or selecting a button on the remote-control unit provided 4. The unit is supplied preprogrammed with a variety of messages, but is also fully programmable by the user, using the supplied keyboard 5.
