Abstract
A packaging blank for protecting one or more stemmed vessels or similar articles, including a top panel 22, two side panels 24, 26, and a base panel (28, fig 4). The base panel is adapted so that when the blank is folded about the one or more stemmed vessels or similar articles (10A, 10B, 10C, fig 1) the base panel surrounds and contacts the stem where it connects to the bowl of the glass. The base panel may include two or more interconnecting sub-panels 30, 32. Each sub-panel may comprise a plurality of openings in the form of slots 34A-C, 36A-C, which in the folded form create a closed aperture or apertures (38A-C, fig 4) about the stems of the packaged articles. The sub-panels may also include one or more mating pairs 62, 64, one member of the pair being disposed in each of the sub-panels. The side panels may have one or more bowl-shaped apertures 54A-C, 56A-C, which extend from fold lines 48 towards respective fold lines 50 and 52. The mating pairs may be disconnected, allowing the package to be reused. The packaging blank may be made of any sheet material, preferably a corrugated material, such as paper, plastics, or card, and may include a carrying handle. The packaging blank may be used with wine glasses, champagne flutes, or stemmed vases.
Description
DESCRIPTION
PACKAGING
The present invention relates to packaging, and more particularly, although not exclusively, to packaging for one or more fragile articles, such as, stemmed vessels or similar articles, for example, a wine glass, a champagne flute or a stemmed vase.
Stemmed vessels can be easily broken during transportation or when on
display. Breakage can result from the very nature of the materials from which
such articles are made. Their high centre of gravity, means such articles are
prone to topple over if knocked where they can impact against one another or
a surface and break.
One method of protecting such vessels is to individually wrap them
with a material which functions to absorb shock, such as newspaper. In the
event that articles topple over or impact against one another they are to some
degree protected.
A further method incorporates the use of an individual case enclosing
the entire object in a protective package.
Such methods can prove time consuming to implement and require a
great deal of packaging material. They also fail to lend themselves to
displaying the vessels. Indeed it would be desirable to display such vessels
whilst packaged.
An aim of the present invention is to provide an improved packaging
for such vessels.
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a packaging blank for protecting one or more stemmed vessels or similar articles having a bowl, a stem and a base, said packaging blank comprising a top panel, two side panels and a base panel, wherein said base panel is adapted such that when the packaging blank is folded about said one or more stemmed vessels or similar articles, the base panel surrounds and contacts the stem where it connects to the bowl of said one or more stemmed vessels or similar articles.
Preferably the base panel comprises a plurality of interconnecting subpanels. Preferably there are two such sub-panels, each comprising openings, preferably in the form of slots, which when the two sub-panels are brought together form a closed aperture.
Preferably the packaging blank comprises a top panel defined by two sides and two ends, said top panel being foldably and integrally connected along at least a portion of each of said two sides to one of said two side panels which are in turn foldably and integrally connected to one of said two respective sub panels of said base panel. Preferably the two sides of said top panel form discontinuous fold lines. The fold lines are interrupted by one or more cover portions which in use extend to cover the rim of one or more bowls and which project beyond the fold lines.
Each side panel may comprise at least one bowl shaped aperture. The respective apertures allow the bowl of the vessel to project therethrough so it is visible. The aperture is shaped to complement the shape of the bowl of the stemmed vessel or similar article.
Preferably the blank is capable of packaging a plurality of stemmed vessels, having an appropriate number of apertures in each side panel, an appropriate number of closed apertures in the base panel and an appropriate number of cover portions in the top panel.
The blank comprises a means for retaining the blank in a folded form.
Preferably the means for retaining the blank in a folded form comprises a mating or interlocking pair or an adhesive strip. More preferably the blank comprises a plurality of such means.
The blank can be fabricated from any sheet material, preferably a corrugated material, such as paper, plastics or card.
It is especially preferred that the package be shaped and dimensioned for use with one or a plurality of wine glasses. In other embodiments of the present invention, the package is shaped and dimensioned for use with other stemmed vessels, for example champagne flutes or stemmed vases. The blank may comprise a carrying means, for example a handle.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention, there is a method of packaging one or more stemmed vessels or similar articles comprising folding a packaging blank, according to the invention, about one or more stemmed vessels or similar articles and retaining it in place.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of packaging according to the invention, folded about three stemmed vessels;
Fig. 2 is the packaging blank of Fig. 1 prior to being folded about said stemmed vessels;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view from one side and above of the folded blank of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view from the other side and below of the folded blank of Fig. 2.
Referring to the figures, Fig. 1 illustrates a folded packaging blank 20 surrounding three stemmed vessels or similar articles 10A, 10B, 10C, for example wine glasses, each having a bowl 12, a stem 14 and a base 16.
The blank 20 is more clearly illustrated in its unfolded form in Fig. 2 and comprises a top panel 22, two side panels 24,26 and a base panel 28 (see
Fig. 4). Said base panel takes the form of two interconnecting sub-panels 30, 32. Each interconnecting sub-panel comprises a plurality ABC of openings 34 or 36 in the form of slots, which in the folded form (see Fig. 4) create a closed aperture or apertures 38A, 38B, 38C about the stems 14 of the glasses where the stem is connected to the bowl of the glass. Thus, the glass is tightly held and the bowl adequately supported thereby preventing adjacent glasses contacting one another.
The top panel 22, of said blank illustrated in Fig. 2, is centrally disposed with respect to the side panels and is defined by two sides 40,42 and two ends 44,46. Each side panel 24,26 is connected to one side of the top panel along fold lines 48. Each side panel is in turn integrally connected, via a respective fold line 50,52, to a respective sub panel 30 or 32. The fold lines 48 are discontinuous and are interrupted along their length by the cover portions 58 which extend to and over the rim 18 of the bowl of each glass.
The side panels 24,26 have one were a plurality (ABC) of bowl shaped apertures 54,56 cut or punched therefrom, which apertures extend from fold lines 48 towards respective fold lines 50 and 52.
Interconnecting sub panels 30,32 comprise one or a plurality of mating pairs 62,64, one member of said pair disposed in each of the sub panels 30 and 32 respectively.
In use the top panel 22 is brought into contact with the rim of the bowl of each glass, such that the cover portions 58 extend to and over said rims 18.
The side panels 24 and 26 pivot about discontinuous fold lines 48 of sides 40 and 42 of the top panel, and are folded such that the bowl 12 of each glass passes through respective apertures 54 and 56. Interconnecting base panels 30, 32 pivot about fold lines 50 and 52 respectively, and are brought together in an overlapping relationship as illustrated in Fig 4 forming base panel 28 with closed apertures 38 about the stems 14 of the glasses. To maintain the package in this configuration, the interconnecting sub panels 30,32 are connected via mating pairs 62,64. Said mating pairs 62,64 can be disconnected, allowing the package to be re-used.
In another embodiment a handle means is provided. The handle means may extend from the top panel 22 or from the side panels 24,26.
