Abstract

The conventional clip appliers used in laparoscopic and open surgery have their clips in line with the shaft of the appliers. The open ends of the clip face downward and the limbs of the clip are vertical. This construction may cause problems by entrapping tissues and structures between the posterior limb of the clip and the structure to be clipped. Besides it limits the surgeon's ability of clipping to only one plane. The laparoscopic perpendicular clip applier provides clipping between two horizontal parallel limbs one above the other in a plane perpendicular to that of the shaft of the clip applier. A clip-applying compartment that has upper and lower jaws and a blind lower can achieve this. This provides safer application of the clips. The posterior aspect of the structure to be clipped is protected. Moreover it enables a wide range of maneuvering and application of the clips in areas not reachable by the conventional clip appliers.

Description

TITLE OF THE INVENTION LAPAROSCOPIC PERPENDICULAR CLIP APPLBER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention is a clip applier to be used in laparoscopic surgery. It Cal ti be included in patent class 29/243. 56. The conventional clip applier holds clips in line with the shaft of the applier. The open ends of clips in the known clip appliers are applied from the superior aspect of the structure be clipped. The conventional clip has two limbs, an anterior and a posterior limb. Application of the posterior limb of the clip may be accompanied by entrapment of tissues between it and the structure to be clipped. The posterior limb may even pass through or penetrate a vital structure or tissue while tryingto contain the structure to be clipped between the two limbs of the clip. The perpendicular clip applier aims at avoiding this defect.
Description of t'ne Invention The laparoscopic perpendicular clip applier is a c ! ip applier tlial is modified at its ! ower end so that the clips are placed perpendicular to the line of the shaft of the clip applier. The clip containing compartment is opened outwards at a right angle to the plane of the shaft of the clip applier and the clips are placed so that the open end faces outwards, and the two limbs of the clip are an upper limb and a lower limb. It enables application of the clip from behinds as well as from the front of the structure to be clipped. Application from behind enables the clip to be sahel placed on the structure to be clipped making sure no vital structures or tissues included between the clip and the structure to be clipped. The tip of the clip applier is blunt. Therefore it can be safely placed in the proper position without penetrating or perforating any vital structures behind the structure to be clipped The presence of a rotator at t'lie upper end of the shaft to rotate the clip applier would be an advantage. The clip applier can be applied with the tip and consequently the clip parallel to the structure to be clipped. Thereafter it can be rotated so tliat the clip contais the structure to be clipped between the two limbs of the clip. Besides it can be used to clip certain structures that cannot easily be clipped with the conventional clip applier.
Although it is assigned for laparoscopic surgery the laparoscopic perpendicular clip applier can be modified to suite open surgery when it is manufactured with a short shaft. The diameter of the shaft can be modifiez tu suite insertion through different size laparoscopic ports. It cas'us made with 3-mm shaft, 5-mm shaft or 10-mm shaft. The clip size can be valiez to suite t'lie surgical situation and application. Six and nine millimeter clips can be manufactured. The laparoscopic perpendicular clip applier can be a disposable clip applier containing multiple clips for multiple use to avoid reloading after each clipping. However in a reusable clip applier the clips can be loaded one after the other.
Drawings The drawings illustrate the perpendicular clip applier demonstrating its lower end, which is open at a right angle to the line of the shaft. The clip can be seen placed in the clip-applying compartment so that it has upper and lower limbs instead of having anterior and posterior limbs.

Claims (1)

  1. First Claim What I claim as my invention is the clip applying compartment that is situated at the lower end of the shaft of the clip applier, which is open in a plane perpendicular to that of the shaft of the clip applier and has a closed lower enu on which the lower limb of the clip resides. It has two be to be used in firing the clip i. e. applying it. The jaws are horizontal and parallel. They are an upper one and a lower one. Therefore the clips are placed so as to have upper and lower limbs.
