Abstract

A high capacity capacitor is formed by a layer of constrained liquid crystal material (6) between two electrodes (4, 5). The electrodes may be carried on self-supporting substrates (2, 3) which may be rigid or flexible so that they may be rolled into a cylindrical shape and placed in a can. The constrained layer (6) may be a liquid crystal polymer material, or free liquid crystal material held within a matrix, e.g. an open or closed pore structure. One example of a liquid crystal polymer is LCP67, a Merck material which is an antiferroelectric material.
