Abstract

A two-gang accessory comprises a socket outlet and a spur connection and fits in a standard two-gang accessory box. The accessory allows a lighting spur to be taken from domestic ring main by replacing a dual socket outlet wired into the ring main. The socket outlet may be switched and the spur fused.

Description

SOCKET CONVERSION This invention relates to the conversion of a normal two-gang socket, ie double, to an electrical accessory designed to let lower amperage cables to be safely connected in domestic situations.
* In the past, I have found that where a client requires work to be carried out, the most localised supply is a double socket. The client may wish to have some wall lights or perhaps an extract fan wired. The two alternatives are returning to the main board for a lighting or lower fuse rated circuit, or to remove the double socket, cut for a'dual'box and replace original double socket with a single socket and a switched fuse unit, or place a spur unit adjacent to socket.
* khat I propose is the simple replacement of a double socket with the all new Spur socket, giving the contractor the ability to retain the same backing box, so not jeopardising existing paintwork, décor or perhaps tiling. This will also give the advantage of exiting from the rear of the box to a new lower fuse rated appliance or fitment.
All internal wiring will be of busbar construction, and switched fuse will be double pole Isolated from the load. Fuse unit supplied with a 3 amp fuse to avoid misuse with smaller Appliances and lighting circuits. Available with or without neon indicator.
CONVERSION The main avantages of this simple conversion are as follows ; 1. No messy wiring within a dual box. Just utilize the existing ring mains or spur supply to the socket 2. No alteration to existing backing box required.
3. No damage to existing décor.
4. Lower rated cables can then be fused down to supply; Lights, Fans, Central heating controllers, Electric doors/curtains, Aerial amplifiers, Waste disposal units, Mains supply to external buildings i. e. Sheds, Garages and conservatories.
5. Where sockets are used for an appliance drawing the maximum 13 amps and causing a heat build up within the socket and also on the pins of a normal domestic plug top this conversion could save numerous electrical fires. Many elderly people have three kilowatt fires, and insist on unplugging the fire every night and further slackening the connections, thereby increasing the build up of heat and the eventual destruction of the socket Please use the following drawing numbers as a guide for front and rear views, and, a typical domestic situation where the Spur Socket could be used.
