Abstract
234,540. Cullum, H. J. Feb. 21, 1924. Cases; tone-arm joints; horns, arranging.-In a portable gramophone or the like, the turntable - can be slid or otherwise moved in an horizontal plane, together with the motor, so that, while the machine is available for pLaying records when the parts are in the normal position, when the turntable is displaced larger records can be played. Fig. 2 shows a construction in which the motorboard 9 is mounted on slides r on the casing of the machine, so that it can be moved forward, together with the motor a and turntable b, to the position shown, when a large record is to be played. Alternatively, with a different arrangement of the slides r, the motor-board may be adapted to be moved laterally to the position shown in dotted lines q<1>. Instead of being capable of a sliding movement the motor-board may be pivoted at one corner, about which it can swing outwardly together with the turntable. In a further modification, the motor and turntable are movable lineally in guide-slots in the motorboard. The tone-arm f, in the machine shown in Fig. 2, is mounted on a platform g hinged at g<1>, the platform being depressible about its hinged end so that the tone-arm, when folded, can be accommodated, together with the sound-box, in the sound-amplifying chamber h. The tone-arm has a screw joint j, which allows the section f<1> to be turned up about an horizontal axis. The sound-box k is connected to a flange f<2> on the end of the tone-arm by screws m passing through arcuate slots in the flange, which allow of angular adjustment. A small horn p is carried by a coverplate n on the diaphragm side of the sound-box. Fig. 5 shows a construction in which the lid d is adapted to contain records, and is itself provided with a cover d<10> of aluminium &c. This cover is attached by yieldable spring hinges y, which allow of expansion of the storage space. The records rest on a partition u having a hole through which the end of the turntable spindle can pass. Straps 6, adapted to engage with clasps 9 and 10 on the body c and lid d respectively, serve to secure the lid or to retain it in a raised position.
