Abstract

The wheel comprises a rim 21, 22, e.g. of stainless steel, connected to a hub by spokes, e.g. of carbon fibre, rivetted or spot welded to the rim. Just inside the rim is a thin annulus 28 of light composite material sandwiched by the spokes and held by screws, rivets or adhesive. Lead balance weights 27 can be fixed between the annulus and the spokes where desired.

Description

NEW ALL PURPOSE BICYCLE WHEELS.
This invention relates to a new wheel design for man powered bicycles: These bicycles include a new frame design and construction method, a new chain drive arrangement to the rear wheel, a new rear wheel spindle and rachet layout and disc brakes on both wheels with fixed locations.
DESCRIPTION This description will relate to both the front and rear wheels even though on some versions the bike frame will vary. All parts are made from precision mechanical engineered parts and include various purchased items such as tyres, bearing etc., and include non-ferrous castings, laminations, composite materials, carbon fibre/carbon fibre re-inforced plastic, tube bending and sheet metal work.
The whole bicycle is illustrated on 25 sheets but this application only involves sheets 7 to 11 inclusive.
Sheets 7 to 11 show front and rear wheel design and construction.
GENERAL The basic concept is to create a lightweight wheel suitable for disc brakes and a new style chain drive arrangement which should allowing later braking and stop the bike quicker and allow higher road speeds than current racing bikes.
WHEELS Another feature of this bike is wheel design which allow the use of disc brakes on both front 25 and rear wheel 26, see sheets 7 to 11. The stopping force being transmitted from the hub to the tyre via carbon fibre (or other material) spokes which are riveted (or spot welded) to the thin stainless steel one piece rim 21 & 22. Between the New all purpose bicycle wheels. opposing spokes just inside the rim is a thin disc 28 of light composite material to strengthen the rim against shock loads, this allows the tyre inflation valve to be fixed and angled to one side between spokes. The thin disc 28 is captured in place by shape and rivets, the wheels are balanced using lead weights 27 at spoke and disc locations all shown on sheet 9.
Each wheel employs 5 matching spokes on each side and these are secured to the tyre rim and composite disc as stated above and to inner spun discs on the hub, construction is such that the first two radial spokes on each side are made in one piece and fixed on the outer side of the hub disc, all other spokes are one piece, the next single spoke either side radially of the pair, are fixed to the inner side of the hub disc and, the final spoke is again mounted on the outside of the hub disc. Once the wheel is constructed it becomes a one piece unit, ready for balancing and is easily mounted at fixed location either front or rear, the front wheel 25 (shts. 7 & 8) being smaller in diameter then the rear wheel 26 in order to suit the front forks layout.

Claims (1)

  1. New all purpose bicycle wheels.
    CLAIMS.
5a The wheels and construction method utilize a thin one piece stainless steel tyre rim specially shaped and joined to 5 spokes and sandwiching an outer lightweight disc 28 sheet 9 between spokes using screws, rivets or adhesives.
5b The wheels and construction method as claimed in claim 5a wherein, two of the spokes each side, which are ribbed and have cut outs to save weight, are made in one piece and firmly attached to the outer surface of one of the spun hub discs as shown on sheets 8 and 11, the remaining individual spokes being fixed alternatively to inner and outer faces of the spun hub disc and this is repeated on both sides of the hub.
5c The wheels and construction method as claimed in claim 5a and 5b wherein, the thin one piece stainless steel tyre rim is not constrained by any rim braking device and can thus be shaped more suitable for manufacture and tyre asembly as shown on sheet 9.
5c The wheels and construction method as claimed in claim 5a and 5b wherein, the wheel unit becomes a one piece item once made and balanced using lead weights 27 firmly fixed between spokes and outer disc as shown on sheet 9.
