Abstract

A data recording platter (102) having an overcoat layer and a method for making the overcoat layer for the data recording platter involving forming the overcoat layer with an increase thickness at the load region (116) of the platter. The increased thickness portion of the overcoat layer may be disposed at the outer periphery (200) of the platter. The thickness may be increased gradually from a central position (202) of the platter toward the outer peripheral edge of the platter. The increased thickness of the overcoat provides added protection of the recording layer of the platter against, for example, collisions of a recording head (112) with the platter surface during loading and/or unloading movements of the head.
