Abstract

A rear-view mirror system incorporating an imaging device 10 disposed behind the mirror surface of the rear-view mirror 2 and arranged to look through the mirror 2 so as to provide a field of view additional to that provided by the mirror. The imaging system 10 may be a TV camera or fibre-optics with wide-angle facilities. The imaging system 10 may be arranged to move with the mirror 2 when the mirror is moved remotely. Alternatively, the imaging device may be moved remotely and independently of the movement of the mirror.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO VEHICLE REARWARD VISION This invention relates to improving the rearward vision on motor vehicles by combining a rear view mirror system with an imaging system displayed on a screen in front of the driver.
It has been known for some time that present rearward vision mirror systems cannot provide a satisfactory field of view when a left hand drive vehicle steers into a right turn, similarly, when a right hand drive vehicle steers into a left hand turn, this is because an additional mirror provided for this function (known as the Class 1V mirror) can never be placed in a practical position to enable the driver to see the necessary field of view.
According to the present invention a vision imaging system, such as a TV camera or fibre optics with wide angle facilities is placed behind a mirror (known as a Class 11 mirror) in such a position that does not affect the legal mirror field of view.
The mirror can be so constructed that the camera or fibre optics head can view through clear glass or semi-transparent reflecting surface without affecting the legal minimum reflectivity, and increase the rearward vision.
The vision imaging system can also be remotely controlled to provide additional vision when needed.
A typical embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in : Figure 1 shows the plan view of the prime mover turning to the right with the camera lens providing a wider field of view than the rear view mirror.
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the mirror face and the relative position of the vision imaging system.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 showing the prime mover I positioned at an angle to the trailer 9 having a mirror 2 which produces a diminished angle of view 7 and thereby losing viewing angles 6 and 4 which are normally seen when prime mover 1 and trailer 9 are in line.
Camera angle 5 shows how the camera 10 can cover the combined angles 4,7 and 6 Referring to Figure 2 which shows the angular position 12 of camera 10 and its centre line to the face of mirror 2, it also shows a typical reflected image of a legal field of view 11 and how this image is unaffected by the position of the camera 10.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMS 1. An imaging system such as a camera combining with a rear view mirror system, positioned and looking through the mirror surface without affecting the legal requirements of the mirror systems for the purpose of providing an additional and necessary field of view.
  2. 2. An imaging system as claimed in Claim 1 that moves with the mirror when the mirror is operated remotely.
  3. 3. Imaging system that can be moved remotely and independent from the mirror movement.
