Abstract

234,269. Talbot, F. C. May 12, 1924. Multiple-toothed d hand - operated clippers. - In a fruit gathering appliance of the kind comprising cutting - apparatus and a receptacle carried by a rod, the cutting-apparatus consists of two hollow open-ended cylinders formed with registering slots having co-operating sharpened edges to shear the stalks of the fruit, one of the cylinders being rotatable within the other and supported therein by pins and slots. The outer cylinder 5 is connected by a bracket 2 to the rod 1 and is provided with slots 9 to receive pins on the inner cylinder 6. One or more springs 11 normally hold the inner cylinder with its notches 7 in register with those of the outer cylinder. The sharp and blunt edges of the slots may be upright, sloping, or curved. A bag 15 secured to the outer cylinder is provided with a side opening 17 and with a hem 16 to allow of its lower end being adjusted. It may be tied to the cylinder or secured by means of a collar and a bayonet joint. The bag may be adjustable in length, the upper part c fitting into a lower part d carried by a ring 30. The rod 1 may be telescopic, the split, threaded, and tapered upper end of the lower part b being gripped on the upper part a by a clamping-nut 18. The fruit stalks are cut by partially rotating the inner cylinder by means of a cable 23 fastened to a reel 22, or an ordinary cranked lever, at the lower end of the rod. The reel 22 is held in normal position by a spring 29, and is rotatable by means of a pivoted lever 24 adjustably locked to it by a bolt 25 the head of which engages the sides a guide - channel 27.
