Abstract
A riding aid (1) includes a belt (2) adapted to pass around the lower back of a rider and a strap (7) supported over part of the belt and adapted to be held in the hands of, and to pass around the lower back of, the rider. Preferably the belt (2) is adjustable in length. Tension means (5A, 5B) may be provided for the belt (2), enabling it to apply tension to the pelvis region of the lower back of the rider. The strap (7) is preferably also adjustable in length. In use the strap (7) may be adjusted such that it is under tension when the rider holds the reins in the normal position. This results in the strap (7) pulling the belt (2) and hence the bottom of the rider's back towards the horse's head, thus strengthening the lower back muscles.
Description
Title: Riding Aid
The present invention relates to a riding aid for equestrians.
When riding a horse there is often a tendency for the rider to topple in a backwards direction.
When learning to ride, there is a tendency to pull on the reins to correct any fall in a backwards direction, but a good rider should learn to use the muscles in the lower back instead. The invention provides an aid to encourage such use of the lower back muscles.
According to the present invention there is provided a riding aid comprising: a) a belt adapted to pass around the pelvis region of the lower back of a rider, and b) a strap supported over part of the belt and adapted to be held in the hands of and pass around the lower back of a rider.
Preferably the belt further includes tension means to tension the belt. The tension means may include at least one elastic strap whereby the belt remains under tension. In one embodiment the tension means is a pair of elastic straps which in use extend in opposite directions from the back of the belt adjacent the spine of the rider to apply tension to the pelvis region of the lower back of the rider.
Preferably the strap is variable in length.
Preferably the belt further includes one or more pads which, in use, prevent the belt from sliding up towards the waist of the rider. The pads may be formed of non-slip fabric. The pads may be positioned to rest substantially on the hips of the rider.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a riding aid 1 having a belt 2 adapted to pass around the pelvis region of the lower back of a rider. Belt 2 may be formed of fabric and has a strip 3 of Velcro (e. g. the loop pile component of Velcro) along the entire outer length thereof. In order to make the belt 2 adjustable in length around the lower back of any rider, a strip 4 of
Velcro (e. g. made of the hook component of Velcro) is provided on the inner part of the end 2A to mate with a portion of strip 3 on the outer part of end 2B.
Tension means for the belt 2 is provided by a pair of elastic straps 5A, 5B which in use extend in opposite directions from the back of the belt adjacent the spine of the rider to apply tension to the pelvis region of the lower back of the rider. Each strap 5A, 5B includes a strip of Velcro 6A, 6B respectively (e. g. made of the hook component of Velcro) which can be secured at different points to the Velcro strip 3 to adjust the tension. Straps 5A, 5B may be formed from a single strip of elastic sewn onto the belt 2 with stitching line 5C.
A strap 7 is supported over part of the belt by loops 8A, 8B, 8C, 8D, and strap 7 is adapted to be held in the hands of and pass around the lower back of a rider. Strap 7 has two ends 7A, 7B which can be joined together by buckle 9A, 9B. The strap is variable in length by adjustment of the buckle 9B position on the strap 7.
The belt further includes two pads I OA, I OB which, in use, prevent the belt from sliding up towards the waist of the rider. The pads are formed of non-slip fabric and are positioned to rest substantially on the hips of the rider.
In use the belt 2 is placed around the back of the rider as low as possible to cover pelvis region, and placed lightly under tension by joining the Velcro strips 3,4. The elastic straps are then put under tension so that the belt 2 is firmly under tension particularly around the pelvis region lower back of the rider. This may tend to crinkle the belt 2 under the elastic straps.
The rider can then mount a horse and adjust the length of strap 7 so that it is under tension whilst holding the reigns in the normal position (i. e. so that the strap 7 is pulling the belt 2 and hence the bottom of the back towards the horses head).
Whilst riding the rider pushes the rear of the back into the belt against the tension of the strap 7 which helps the rider to learn to keep balance of the upper torso using the lower back muscles rather than using the reigns. The elastic straps 5A, 5B ensure the belt remains under tension.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
