Abstract

A system whereby a heavy-duty air-bag is fitted to the front of a locomotive and can be rapidly activated by the driver upon seeing danger ahead or in night-time or poor visibility use can be activated automatically.

Description

LOCOMOTIVE PROTECTION SYSTEM The primary purpose of this invention is to save the lives of people nit by locomotives on railway tracks. It will also reduce damage to locomotives due to foreign objectes on the line and reduce the chance of de-railment from such objects. It will also reduce the trauma to drivers involved in suicide cases.
At the content a locomotive driver has to sit helpiessly even though he/she may see a person or object in front of him/her on the railway line. All he/she can do is apply the brakes and hope.
My invention allows him/ber to take action before impact by de-ploying a heavy duty air-bag. The air-bag will be fitted to the front of the locomotive and aciivated by a button in the drivers cab when he/she sees a dangerous situation. The air-bag will inflate rapidly prior to impact. Upon impact the person or object will be bounced out of the way of the locomotive due to the elastic nature of the air-bag.
The positioning of the air-bag, control cable and button will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : FIGURE RE shows a side view of a typical locomotive FIGURE 2 shows a front view with air-bag fitted FIGURE 3 shows a front view with air-bag activated Under normal working conditions the air-bag is shown at position 'A' in figures 1 and 2. In an emergency the air-bag is de-ployed by the driver by pressing a button in the drivers cab, the air-bag is rapidlyinflatedpriortoiBnact,asscwatoetici 'B firss1s.'d.

The word locomotive in this document is meant to include all types of power unit used to pull trains and move around on railway tracks e.g. railcars sprinters, high speed trains, electric units, tracktesters, etc.

Claims (2)

  1. LOCOMOTIVE PECTECTION SYSTEM CLAIMS A beavy-duty air-bag system fitted to the front of a locomotive which can be rapidly inflated by the driver from within the cab prior to an impending impact.
  2. 2) An air-bag system as claimed in claiml but activated instead by an automatic detection system for night and poor visibility use.
