Description

CONTAINER FOR KEEPING COMPACT DISK OR MAGNETIC DISK CASES AND U-SHAPED UNITS THEREOF Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to a modular container for keeping a plurality of compact disk cases or magnetic disk cases, and more particularly to the modular container which is composed of a plurality of U-shaped units of standardized size and design.
Background of the Invention The conventional container for keeping compact disk cases (in which a compact disk is put) is generally fixed in shape and size, and is composed of component parts which can be neither separated nor reassembled. In order to accommodate an increasing number of compact disks or magnetic disks, a plurality of conventional containers must be arranged side by side or stacked together.
The conventional compact disk or magnetic disk container described above is defective in design in that its large volume often hampers the storage, the packaging and the shipment of the container.
In addition, the process of making the conventional container by injection molding is not cost-effective at best in light of the large volume of the container. Moreover, the conventional container is not versatile in design to meet the needs of an individual consumer.
Summary of the Invention It is therefore the primary objective of the present invention to provide a container for keeping modular CD or magnetic disk cases consisting of a plurality of units that can be arranged in a variety of ways.
It is another objective of the present invention to provide a modular container for keeping CD or magnetic disk cases which is relatively simple in construction and is therefore cost-effective.
It is still another objective of the present invention to provide a container for keeping modular CD or magnetic disk cases having components which are easy to be assemble, relatively small in volume and can be thus stored, packaged and shipped easily and economically.
In keeping with the principe of the present invention, the foregoing objectives of the present invention are accomplished by a container for keeping modular CD or magnetic disk cases consisting essentially of a plurality of U-shaped units. The U-shaped units have surfaces, with each of the surfaces being substantially parallel to the X-Y plane, the X-Z plane, or the Y-Z plane of a three-dimensional coordinate axis X-Y-Z. The Ushaped units have a Z-Y direction rear plate and two X-Z direction side plates which are located respectively at two ends of the rear plate such that the side plates are perpendicular to the rear plate, and that the two side plates are parallel to each other. The two opposite X-Z direction surfaces (first surfaces) of the two side plates of the U-shaped units have a plurality of corresponding grooves in order to support a plurality of compact disk cases or magnetic disk cases in the opening of the Ushaped units. The two side plates are symmetrical to each other with respect to an imaginary X-Z direction plane which is perpendicular to the rear plate and equally divides the rear plate into two parts. The side plate has a plurality of Z-direction female retaining structures which are located on a second surface opposite to the first surface. The Zdirection female retaining structures are located on the second surface and at two edges contiguous to an X-Y direction third surface and an X-Y direction fourth surface, with each edge thereof being provided with at least one Z-direction female retaining structure. These Z-direction female retaining structures are symmetrical to one another with respect to an imaginary X-Y direction plane which is located in such a manner that it divides the side plate into two equal parts.
Preferably, the side plate is further provided with one or a plurality of Y-direction first female retaining structures which are located in the third surface and are contiguous to the edge of the second surface. The side plate is still further provided with one or a plurality of Y-direction second female retaining structures which are located in the fourth surface and are contiguous to the edge of the second surface. The Y-direction first female retaining structure and the Y-direction second female retaining structures are not in contact with the Z-direction female retaining structures. More preferably, the Y-direction first female retaining structures and the Y-direction second female retaining structures of the side plate are symmetrical to one another with respect to the imaginary X Y direction plane.
The modular CD or magnetic disk container of the present invention further has a plurality of male retaining members. The U-shaped units are arranged in alignment along the Z-direction such that two adjoining Zdirection female retaining structures of two adjoining U-shaped units are jointly engaged with one male retaining member, so as to join the two adjoining U-shaped units together. The modular CD or magnetic disk container of the present invention still further has a bottom cover and a top cover, which are respectively joined with the first U-shaped unit and the last U-shaped unit such that the bottom cover and the top cover are parallel to the X-Y plane. As a result, the container of the present invention has one open side and five closed sides.
The present invention provides a composite container for keeping compact disk cases or magnetic disk cases. The composite container of the present invention is composed of a plurality of U-shaped units, male retaining members, bottom covers, and top covers. The U-shaped units have side plates which are provided with a plurality of the Y-direction first female retaining structures and the Y-direction second female retaining structures. The bottom covers and the top covers are identical in construction to one another. The bottom covers are provided in one X-Y direction surface thereof with a plurality of Y-direction female retaining structures corresponding to the Y-direction first and second female structures of the U-shaped units. The U-shaped units are stacked along the Z-direction and are arranged side by side in alignment such that the U-shaped units form a series of columns, and each column has a plurality of having U-shaped units. The first and the last U-shaped units of one column of the U-shaped units are respectively fastened with the top covers and the bottom covers, with the top covers and the bottom covers being parallel to the X-Y plane. In addition, a portion of two adjoining Ydirection female retaining structures is fastened with one male retaining member, whereas a portion of two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures is fastened with one male retaining member. As a result, a plurality of U-shaped units, a plurality of bottom covers and a plurality of top covers are joined together to form the composite container consisting of a plurality of U-shaped units which are stacked in alignment along the Z-direction to form a plurality of columns.

Detailed Description of the Embodiments As shown in Fig. 1, a compact disk container of the first preferred embodiment of the present invention is composed of a plurality of Ushaped units 10 for keeping the compact disk cases, and two covers 20.
Only one cover 20 is shown in the drawing. The U-shaped units 10 have a plurality of surfaces, which are parallel to the X-Y plane, the X-Z plane and the Y-Z plane of a three-dimensional X-Y-Z coordinate axis. The Ushaped units 10 have a Z-Y direction rear plate 30 and two X-Z direction side plates 40 which are located respectively at two ends of the rear plate 30 such that the two side plates 40 are parallel to each other, and that the two side plates 40 are perpendicular to the rear plate 30. Two opposite X-Z direction surfaces 41 (first surfaces) of two side plates 40 of the Ushaped units 10 are provided respectively with five corresponding grooves 42 to enable five compact disk cases to be supported in an opening 50 of the U-shaped units 10.
The two side plates 40 of the U-shaped units 10 are identical in shape and construction to each other. The side plates 40 have two Zdirection female retaining structure 44 located in a second surface 43 facing the back of the first surface 41, two Y-direction first female retaining structures 46 located in the third surface 45 which connects the first and the second surfaces, and two Y-direction second female retaining structures 48 located in the fourth surface 47 which connects the first and the second surfaces. The Z-direction female retaining structures 44 are located in the second surface 43 such that they are contiguous to two edges of third surface 45 and the fourth surface 47, with each edge having two female retaining structures 44. The Y-direction first female retaining structures 46 are located in the edges of the third surface 45 and the second surface 43, whereas the Y-direction second female retaining structures 48 are located in the edges of the fourth surface 47 and the second surface 43. The Y-direction first female retaining structures 46 are symmetric with each other with respect to a y-z direction imaginary at the central line of the second surface 43, as well as the Y-direction second female retaining structures 48.
The rear plate 30 is provided in the top surface thereof with two Xdirection first female retaining structures 31, and in the bottom surface thereof with two X-direction second female retaining structures (not shown in the drawings). The X-direction first female retaining structure 31 and the second female retaining structure are respectively located in proximity of the edges of the back surface of the rear plate 30. The back surface of the rear plate 30 is not shown in the drawing. The rear plate 30 is further provided with four Z-direction female retaining structures located in the back surface of the rear plate 30, with two of the four female retaining structures 32 being located in proximity of the edge of the top surface of the rear plate 30, and with other two of the four female retaining structures (not shown in the drawing) being located in proximity of the edge of the bottom surface of the rear plate 30.
All female retaining structures of all directions of the side plates 40 and the rear plates 30 are identical in construction to one another.
The side plate 40 is provided at one end thereof with a receiving seat 49 for receiving one end of the rear plate 30. In other words, two ends of the rear plate 30 are received in the receiving seats 49 of the two side plates 40 such that the rear plate 30 and the two side plates 40 form one U-shaped unit 10. The U-shaped unit 10 so formed can be separated by an imaginary X-Y direction plane such that the U-shaped unit 10 is divided into symmetrical upper portion and lower portion. The U-shaped unit 10 so formed can be further divided equally by an imaginary X-Z direction plane into symmetrical left portion and right portion.
The covers 20 have a size and a shape enough to cover the X-Y direction cross section of the U-shaped units 10. The covers 20 are respectively provided in each of the two X-Z direction surfaces thereof with two Z-direction female retaining structures 24 corresponding to the Zdirection female retaining structures 44 of the side plate 40. The covers 20 are further provided respectively in the bottom thereof with four Ydirection female retaining structures 28 (only two of them are shown in the drawings) corresponding to the Y-direction female retaining structures 48 of the side plates 40, and two X-direction female retaining structures 27 corresponding to the X-direction female retaining structures 31 of the rear plate 30. The covers 20 are still further provided in a rear surface 21 thereof with two Z-direction female retaining structures 24'corresponding to the Z-direction female retaining structures 32 of the rear plate 30.
After a plurality of the U-shaped units 10 are arranged in alignment along the Z-direction, six male retaining members 60 are used to fasten two adjoining U-shaped units 10 such that four of the six male retaining members 60 are used to fasten two adjoining side plates 40, and that two of the six male retaining members 60 are used to fasten two adjoining rear plates 30. Two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures of two adjoining U-shaped units 10 are engaged jointly with one male retaining member 60. The covers 20 of the present invention may be used as a bottom cover or a top cover, which are respectively fastened with the first U-shaped unit or the last U-shaped unit of the aligned U-shaped units 10 such that the bottom cover or the top cover is parallel to the X-Y plane, and that two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures of the first U-shaped unit 10 contiguous to the bottom cover are jointly fastened with one male retaining member 60, and further that two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures of the last U-shaped unit 10 contiguous to the top cover are jointly fastened with one male retaining member 60. As a result, the container so formed is provided with one open side and five closed sides. In view of the fact that the female retaining structures of the U-shaped units 10 and the covers 20 of the present invention are identical in construction to one another, only the Z-direction female retaining structures 44 of the side plates 40 are exemplified to explain further the detailed structures of the female retaining structures as well as the engagement of the female retaining structures with the male retaining members 60.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the female retaining structure 44 is in fact a recess 71 which is located at an edge of the second surface 43 contiguous to the third surface 45 or the fourth surface 47. Located between the recess 71 and the third surface 45, or the fourth surface 47, is a wall 72 which has an upright height lower than a distance (depth) from the bottom of the recess 71 to the second surface 43. The upright height of the wall 72 is a straight-line distance between the bottom of the recess 71 to the wall top of the wall 72, as shown in Fig. 3.
The male retaining member 60 is of a construction similar to a single-span bridge and is composed of two support pillars 61 opposite to each other, and a connection portion 62 bridging the two pillars 61 which are retained in two recesses 71 of two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures 44. In the meantime, the connection portion 62 traverses the walls 72 of two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures 44. The male retaining member 60 has a shape and a size, which coincide with the shape and the depth that are formed by the two adjoining recesses 71 and the two adjoining walls 72. In other words, the two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures 44 of the second surfaces 43 of the two adjoining U-shaped units 10 are filled with one male retaining member 60 to form a smooth plane, as shown in Fig. 3.
The Z-direction female retaining structures 44 are further provided with a protrusion 73 extending from the inner wall of the recess 71, whereas each of the two support pillars 61 of the mate retaining member 60 is provided in the outer surface thereof with one slot 63 corresponding in location to the protrusion 73. When the male retaining member 60 is engaged with two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures 44, two protrusions 73 of the recesses 71 of the two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures 44 are received in the two slots 63 of the male retaining member 60. As a result, the male retaining member 60 is securely engaged with the two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures 44.
It is therefore readily apparent that the modular CD container of the present invention is composed of a plurality of the U-shaped units 10 which can be arranged in a variety of ways. As shown in Fig. 4, the modular container of the present invention is composed of six U-shaped units 10 in conjunction with 40 male retaining members 60 and 4 covers 20. In other words, the modular CD container so formed is formed of two columns and three rows, with the opening on the right-hand column facing toward the viewer of Fig. 4, and with the opening on the left-hand column facing away from the viewer of Fig. 4. As shown in Fig. 4, a portion (denoted by 60Y) of every two adjoining Y-direction female retaining structures of the CD container of the present invention is engaged with one male retaining member 60', whereas a portion of every two adjoining Z-direction female retaining structures of the CD container of the present invention is engaged with one male retaining member 60". As a result, the CD container of the present invention, as shown in Fig. 4, is formed of two columns and three rows.
As shown in Fig. 5, a CD container of another embodiment of the present invention is composed of 4*n U-shaped units 10,16* (n+1) male retaining members 60, and eight covers 20, wherein the covers 20 are assumed transparent. The CD container so formed is capable of receiving the compact disk cases in all directions (east, south, west, and north). The U-shaped units 10 have a square cross section. In addition, the Y-direction female retaining structures 46 of the side plates 40 are identical in construction and in position to the X-direction female retaining structures 31 of the rear plates 30 with respect to a corner turning point C of the U-shaped unit 10, so that the side plates 40 and the rear plates 30 of two adjacent U-shaped units 10 can be fastened by male retaining members 60.
The CD container of the present invention, as shown in Fig. 5, is preferably provided with a rotating device under the bottom cover, by which the user of the CD container can turn the container to retrieve or store the compact disk case.
The CD containers of the present invention, as shown in Figs. 1-5, can be used to keep the compact disk cases or the magnetic disk cases of other shapes, such as ZIP and LS-120 magnetic disk with case, MO compact disk, in conjunction with an adapter which is dispose in a space formed by the grooves 42 of the two side plates 40 of the U-shaped unit 10.
The CD containers of the present invention, as shown in Figs. 1-5, can be used partially or entirely as the receiving seat of a drawer.
