Abstract
A hammer 20 includes a handle 21 having a neck portion 24 formed close to one end, and a head 22 secured to the handle close to the neck portion. A protective sleeve 10 is engaged on the handle and includes a neck portion (12 Fig 1) engaged with the neck portion of the handle for preventing the head from being disengaged from the handle after the handle is broken (26 Fig 3). The sleeve includes a number of ribs 11 formed on the outer portion for facilitating the grasping of the handle. The sleeve is made of plastics material and is shrunk onto the handle.
Description
2341572 HAMNER HAVING A PROTECTIVE SLEEVE The invention relates to a
hammer having a protective sleeve for the handle.
Typical hammers comprise a head secured on one end of a handle of wood, plastic. material, composite fibers, or casting materials which may be broken after long term of use. No protective members have been provided for preventing the head from being disengaged from the handle after the handle is broken. 10 It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide a hammer having a protective sleeve engaged on the outer portion of the handle for preventing the head from being disengaged from the handle after the handle is broken. 15 According to the present invention there is provided a hammer comprising: a) a handle including a f irst end having a neck portion, b) a head secured to the handle, and 20 c) a sleeve engaged on the handle and including a neck portion engaged with the neck portion of the handle for preventing the head from being disengaged from the handle after the handle is broken. The sleeve includes an outer portion having a plurality of ribs formed thereon for facilitating a grasping of the handle.
In the drawings:- 2 FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a hammer; FIG. 2 is an exploded view of the hammer; and FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view taken along lines 3-3 of FIG. 1.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, a hammer indicated by the reference numeral "2C comprises a head 22 secured on one end of a handle 21. The handle 21 includes a neck portion 24 formed in on end close to the head 22.
The neck portion 24 is the area that will be easily broken after use, such as the broken portion 26 as shown in FIG. 3, when the handle 21 is made of wood, plastic material, composite fibers, or casting materials.
A protective sleeve 10 is engaged on the outer portion of the handle 21 and is preferably made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which may be shrunk after being heated. It is preferable that the sleeve 10 is heated to a temperature ranging from 130-1600C for allowing the sleeve 10 to be shrunk to the shape corresponding to that of the sleeve 21 and to be solidly engaged onto the handle 21. As best shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, after the sleeve 10 is shrunk, the sleeve 10 may apply a grasping force against the handle 21 and has a neck 12 formed in one end corresponding to the neck portion 24 of the handle 21. The neck 12 of the sleeve 10 is thus formed as a protective member for preventing the head 22 from being disengaged from the 3 handle 21 after the handle 21 is broken.
Referring again to FIGS. 1 and 2, the sleeve 10 may be easily formed with any suitable shape or formed with a number of ribs 11 for facilitating the grasping of the handle 21. The sleeve 10 may also be formed with or applied with various colors, words, trademarks or patterns when required.
