Abstract

A backing board designed to protect the artwork from acid attack and moisture comprises an acid blocking layer of suitable metallic foil of or plastic sheeting of petroleum product origin on one surface of the board and the addition of a waterproof layer of plastic sheeting of petroleum product origin on the other side of the board. The core of the board may be of cellulose base, i.e., woodpulp board or wood particle board, and can be solid core or fluted (corrugated) construction. The waterproof layer side may have a 'Kraft' type paper underneath the waterproof layer. The board would not be restricted to any specific thickness and may vary from 1.0 to 5.0 millimetres overall thickness.

TRADES The invention relates to the backing board used to back framed pictures. Such backing board suffers from two major disadvantages, which the invention remedies.
The first disadvantage relates to acidity in the board. This acidity, however slight it may be, attacks the artwork, causing it to deteriorate over time. This time varies according to the degree of acidity (pH).
The other disadvantage is that the backing board has a tendency to absorb moisture, causing it to bow out from the back of the frame, leaving a gap between the artwork and the board, which allows the artwork to become buckled and distorted.
The object of this invention is to protect the artwork from acid attack, and prevent the backing board from absorbing moisture, by the addition of an acid blocking laminate on one surface (side A), and the addition of a waterproof laminate on the other (side 13).
The laminates may be of a suitable metallic foil or plastic sheeting of petroleum product origin, in the case of side A; and plastic sheeting of petroleum product origin in the case of side B. However, any suitable laminate may be used. Lamination is achieved by a suitable adhesive.
The basic composition of the internal backing board may be of cellulose base, i.e., woodpulp board, or wood particle board, and can be of solid core or fluted (corrugated) construction.
To enhance the appearance of the board, side B can be laminated with a 'Kraft' type paper, underneath the waterproof laminate, but this is not essential.
The board would not be restricted to any specific thickness and may vary from 1.0 to 5.0 millimetres overall thickness.

  1. T.B.B. TOTAL BLOCK BOARD 1) Total Block BoaTd prevents acidic attack and moisture penetration to the artwork that it backs.
  2. 2) The metallic foil or other laminate prevents acidic attack.
  3. 3) The petroleum product derivative laminate, which normally would be of polymerised polyethylene which covers the kraft liner prevents moisture penetration into the core of the board.
  4. 4) The cellulose based core of the board, which normally would be pH neutral woodpulp, may be solid core or corrugated core.
