Abstract

The mechanism has a motor driven linear actuator 14 connected to a lever 12 for operation of the switch and means for locking the lever in the "on" or "of' position characterised in that the locking means can only be operated after disconnection of the linear actuator from the lever. A pin 18 is removed from a connector 19 to allow the lever 12 to be moved to position(s) whereat it can be padlocked.

Description

2341006 SWITCHGEA This invention concerns switchgear and, more
particularly, a lever operated high voltage isolator switch.
It is becoming increasingly desirable for such switches to be equipped with motor driven linear actuators connected to their operating levers to enable their operation from a remote location by means of radio signals for example. In this way the need for an engineer to make a site visit can often be eliminated enabling more rapid restoration of supply following a power failure for example.
It is common practice to lock the operating lever in either the 'on" position or, more often, the "off'position to prevent operation of the switch during maintenance operations. One commonly used lock is comprised by a padlock whose shackle is passed through an aperture in the lever aligned with an aperture in a fixed frame member.
A problem arises if an attempt is made to operate the switch from a remote location when the lever is locked. A fault would be recognised at the remote location necessitating an engineer to make a site visit to investigate its cause.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a lever operated high voltage isolator switch which overcomes the problem aforesaid.
According to the present invention, there is provided a lever operated high voltage isolator switch having a motor driven linear actuator connected to the lever for operation of the switch and means for locking the lever in the "on" or "off,' position 1 characterised in that the locking means can only be operated after disconnection of the linear actuator from the lever.
The lever may be manually pivotal beyond the "on" and "off ' positions to which it is driven by the actuator thus to align an aperture therein with one or other of further apertures in fixed frame members.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing, which show, by way of example only, one form of isolator switch embodying same.
Of the drawing:- Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the isolator switch; Figure 2 shows a fragmentary view of part of the operating mechanism for the switch on an enlarged scale; and Figure 3 shows a view of the operating mechanism in the direction of the arrow A on Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the isolator switch 10 is mounted on ground engaging legs 11, and has a lever 12 which can be pivoted to throw the switch between its "on" and "off ' conditions.
A linear actuator 14 driven by a motor 15 has its ram 16 connected to the end of the lever 12 remote from the axle 17 which carries the lever 12 by, means of a -3 removable pin 18 which passes through apertures in the lever 12 and arms of a bifurcated connector 19 on the end of the ram 16.
Studs 20 extend outwardly from the lever 12 for engagement by a handle Z"> (not shown) to enable manual operation of the switch 10 if required.
As shown in Figure 3 the lever 12 may be turned beyond the "on" and "off portions to which it may be driven by the actuator 14, manually after disconnection of the actuator 14 by removal of the pin 18 to bring an aperture 21 in the lever 12 into alignment with one or other of apertures 22 and 23 in fixed frame members 24 and 25, to enable the lever 12 to be locked in position by passing the shackle of a padlock (not shown) through the aperture 21 and one of the apertures 22 and 23.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
CLAMS 1 A lever operated high voltage isolator switch having a motor driven linear actuator connected to the lever for operation of the switch and means for locking the lever in the "on" or "of' position characterised in that the locking means can only be operated after disconnection of the linear actuator from the lever.
2. An isolator switch according to claim 1 wherein the lever is manually.
pivotal beyond the "on" and "of'positions to which it is driven by, the actuator thus to align an aperture therein with one or other of further apertures in fixed frame members for receipt of a locking means.
3. An isolator switch according to claim 2 wherein said locking means comprises the shackle of a padlock.
