Abstract

The Custom Trike towing device includes a main draw bar (1) having a standard 50mm tow hitch bolted at a front end thereof for attachment to a conventional 50mm tow ball. At the rear end of the frame two clamps (2) are provided which can be bolted to the front forks of the Trike just below the headlight to allow the front suspension to remain operative. A pair of rose joints (4) connect the clamps (2) to the main draw bar to allow up and down movement of the draw bar so as to react to any undulations in the road surface when towing. The towing device removes the need for someone to ride the Trike to control the steering whilst it is being towed. Being of solid construction the towing device is able to steer the Trike whilst it is being towed.

Description

2340807 This invention relates to a 'Custom' Trike Towing Device.
A Custom Trike is - by definition - a 3 wheeled vehicle constructed using parts from a MotorcycJe and parts from a Motorcar. This towing device will enable this type of Trike to be recovered, in the event of a breakdown, by any vehicle fitted with a towbar having a standard SOmm tow ball attached, providing all 3 wheels of the Trike are still fully functional and the Trike has a standard motorcycle front end.
The towing device removes the need for someone to ride the Trike to control it's steering whilst it is being towed. Being of rigid construction, (Figs. 1 & 7) except for the rose joints (Fig. 4) it is able to steer the Trike as it is being towed. All 3 of the Trikes wheels remain in full contact with the road at all times during recovery.
The device is attached to the Trike by 2 clamps (Fig. 2) around the front forks just below the headlight to allow the front suspension to remain operative. Four bolts, (Fig. 3) keep the clamps in place on the forks.
A pair of rose joints (Fig. 4) connect the clamps to the main 'draw bar' (Figs. 2 & 7) and are used to maintain up and down movement of the 'draw bar' so as to react to any undulations in the road surface whilst towingThe device is a mild steel, welded fabrication alloyoring it to be constructed to extend out over the front wheel and down to the tow hitch of the towing vehicle. (Figs. 1, 5 & 6) Figure 1 shows a side view of the complete towing device.
Figure 2 shows the clamps that attach the towing device to the forks of the Trike.
Figure 3 shows the 4 bolts used to secure the towing device to the motorcycle forks.
Figure 4 shows the rose joints used to allow up & down movement of the 'draw bar' of the towing device.
Figure 5 shows the SOmm tow hitch used to attach the towing device to a 50mm tow ball.
Figure 6 shows the towing device attached to a Trike.
Figure 7 shows the towing device in a'birds eye'view.

Claims
1. A towing device for towing a Trike behind a towing vehicle comprises a substantially rigid frame including attachment means at a front end thereof, adapted to mount on a tow hitch at the rear of a towing vehicle, and cJamp means at a rear end thereof for attachment to the front forks of the Trike.
2. A towing device as cJaimed in claim 1 wherein the clamp means at the rear of the frame permits pivotal movement between the frame of the towing device and the front forks of the Trike in a horizontal axis transverse to the direction of travel of the Trike but prevents relafive pivotal therebetween in any other direction.
3. A towing device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings. v j 'i
