Description
2339634 UVOROVEMEENTS IN OR RELATING TO FMNG DEVICES The present invention
relates to fixing devices, and more particularly to press snap fixing devices.
The efficient assembly of modules having multiple components is extremely important when manufacturing large quantities of such modules.
In such assemblies, the security of components in the finished io assembly is of great importance. Also of importance is the efficient assembly of such modules. Elimination of assembly steps and components is of great benefit.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a module comprising a plurality of components which is assembled efficiently and securely.
The present invention will be described with reference to a press snap module but the principles could be utilised in other designs.
Also, the present invention will be described with reference to an electrical assembly, in particular a telephone socket but the invention could be used for other electrical modules. Reference to an electrical component is therefore intended to include other types of components, e.g. electronic/mechanical.
The present invention provides a secure fixing means for an electrical component, including means for fixing said electrical component to a base plate on a first side of said electrical component and including I flange means attached to said electrical component on a second side other than said first side, said flange means being sized to engage with a member adjacent to said base plate in a finished assembly to secure the second side of said electrical component in relation to said base plate.
Preferably said first and second sides are at opposite sides of said electrical component.
Preferably said base plate comprises a printed circuit board.
Preferably said finished assembly comprises said base plate and a mounting plate, said mounting plate including snap fit fitments for engaging said base plate and in which said mounting plate further comprises bridge means for engagement of said flange means for engaging with said flange means when said base plate and said mounting plate are assembled. said bridge means securing the second side of said electrical component against said base plate.
Preferably said electrical component is secured to the base plate on the first side by soldering.
Preferably said electrical component comprises a jack socket.
Preferably said flange means comprises a plastic flange formed integrally with the jack socket.
Preferably the base plate also comprises alignment means comprising alignment hole co-operating with a peg on said mounting plate.
2 Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompany drawings in which:- Figure 1 shows a finished assembly in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the assembly of Figure 1 in which the base plate with mounted electrical components are separated from an adjacent member; Figure 3 shows the assembly of Figure 1 in plan view; Figure 4 shows the assembly of Figure 3 in front elevation; Figure 5 shows the assembly of Figure 3 in rear elevation; Figure 6 shows the assembly of figure 3 in cross-section along lines B-B; and Figure 7 shows a detail of the assembly of Figure 6.
With reference to the drawings, the assembly 10 of Figure I comprises a base plate 20 which preferably comprises a printed circuit board. The printed circuit board 20 is retained in a fixed position with respect to an adjacent menfoer 30 by a press-snap flexible lever 32.
Lever 32 has two latch projections 320,322. Projection 320 serves to secure board 20 against member 30 at one end 22 of the board.
Projection 322 serves to secure the complete assembly into, for example, a face plate 323 (shown dotted in Figure 6) which may secure the socket arrangement into a wallbox in known manner.
To disengage board 20, lever 32 is bent in the direction of arrow 324.
3 At the other end 24 of board 20, the board is provided with a tongue portion 26 which in the complete assembly is inserted under a bridge structure 12 on support member 10.
Support member 10 also has two further flexible levers 34,36 which, in combination with lever 32, provide the three point support to secure the assembly within the face plate 323 (not shown). Each lever 34,36 has a respective latch member 342,362 for this purpose.
Mounted on base plate 20 are, for example, a number of components and by way of example for a printed circuit board, a socket 240 is shown. This socket is secured at one end by soldered contacts 242 which not only secure that end of the socket but also provides electrical connection to the contacts 244 within the socket, as shown in Figure 6.
Normally, under such circumstance, the socket 240 would also be secured against board 20 by a further securement device such as a rivet.
In the present invedtion the socket 240 is only secured at the one end by solder contacts 242 and at the other end the socket is provided with a small flange 246 which comprises an assembly retention mould feature which is integrally formed with the socket casing 240.
This flange 246, as may be seen in Figure 4, is inserted under a stepped portion 122 of bridge 12, the board 20 being retained under the second step 124 of bridge 12.
To align board 20 a locating pin 302 is preferably provided on member 30 which co-operates with a locating hole 202 on plate 20.
4 To assemble, tongue portion 26 is inserted under bridge 12 and the board 20 is snapped into position under lever 32 being retained by latch 320. The assembly is therefore completed by a single snap latch action which not only retains board 20 but also secures one end of socket 240 and also aligns board 20 by virtue of the steps 122,124 and locating pin, hole combination 302,202.
