Abstract

A plastics headed nail, has a shaft 10 which has a substrate penetrating end and a head end 8. The nail has a plastics head 1 secured thereto by moulding, welding or adhesive. The head 1 has a lower face 4, an upper face 7 and side faces 5. The lower face 4 is provided with at least one continuous lip 11 depending therefrom and there may also be additional lips provided. The continuous lip 11 creates an annular seal between the head of the nail and the substrate into which it is driven to prevent the ingress of moisture.

Description

1 1 1 PLASTICS HEADED NAIL 2338765 The present invention relates to
plastics headed nails and in particular to plastics headed nails for use in external roofline work.
Plastics headed nails are known in the field of external roofline work when used with PVC roofline boards. However, it is common for moisture to creep between the plastics head of a nail and the face of the barge board into which it is driven. This moisture can cause the shaft of the nail to corrode which weakens the nail and produces staining of the roofline board around the head of the nail. In the context of the present invention the term "roofline boards" is taken to include barge boards, soffit boards, fascia boards and finial boards.
The object of the present invention is to provide a nail head which prevents the ingress of moisture between a roofline board and nail head thus reducing the onset of corrosion.
Accordingly the present invention provides a plastics headed nail having an elongate shaft which has a substrate penetrating end and a head end, wherein said head end has secured thereto a plastics head having a lower face and an upper face and at least one side face extending between said upper and lower faces, wherein said lower face is provided with at least one continuous lip depending from its perimeter.
Preferably the lower face and upper face are substantially parallel to each other.
1 2 The depending lip contacts the substrate into which the nail is driven and creates a seal by compression between the nail head and the substrate to prevent the ingress of moisture.
There may be two concentric depending lips provided especially where the nail head has a large diameter, for example greater than 1Omm. The presence of two depending lips provides a double seal.
The substrate may be a barge board, for example a PVC barge board, 10 which may have a cellular core.
The plastics head of the nail is preferably of different hardness to the substrate to which it is intended to be applied. This ensures deformation to some extent of the lip on the lower face of the nail head, or of the area of substrate into which the nail is driven, to create a seal by compression.
Preferably the shaft of the nail is made of stainless steel. The head of the nail is preferably a plastics material such as acetal or polypropylene.
Preferably the plastics head is formed on the head end of the nail shaft by moulding, most preferably injection moulding. Alternatively the plastics head may be secured to the head end of the shaft by welding or adhesive.
Preferably the plastics head comprises an upper portion and a lower portion. The lower portion extends upwardly from the lower face and is cylindrical in shape and the upper portion extends between the top of the lower portion and the upper face and is frustoconical in shape. The top face of the plastics head may be domed.
3 The present invention further provides a method of preventing the ingress of moisture between a roofline board and a plastics headed nail driven into the roofline board by driving the nail of the present invention into the roofline board and contacting the lip of the lower face of the nail head with the face of the roofline board and creating an annular seal.
The present invention will now be described in further detail by means of example only and with reference to the drawings in which:- Figure 1 shows a cross section of a plastics nail head of the present invention; and Figure 2 shows a side view of the nail.
As shown in Figure 1, the plastics nail head 1 comprises a lower portion 2 and an upper portion 3, the lower portion 2 being cylindrical and comprising a lower face 4 and side faces 5 which are at right angles to the lower face 4. The upper portion 3 extends from the lower portion 2 and is frustoconical in shape having an upper face 7 which is slightly domed.
The plastics nail head 1 is injection moulded onto a head 8 of a nail 9 having an elongate shaft 10. The plastics nail head is made from acetal or polypropylene.
The lower face 4 of the plastics nail head 1 is provided with a continuous lip 11 depending from the perimeter of the lower face 4.
In use the shaft 10 of the nail 9 bearing the plastics nail head 1 is driven into a substrate which is preferably a cellular PVC roofline board. The depending lip 11 contacts the roofline board and, because of the 4 difference in hardness between the plastics head and the cellular PVC roofilne board, the lip 11 causes some deformation under pressure of the barge board.
