Abstract

A malleable non-liquid paint material having modelling clay-like consistency has an adhesive substance incorporated during formulation so that it will adhere to substrates. A thin transparent sheet of material 5 is shaped to represent a decorative article such as a mosaic, the sheet having raised areas 6 to represent the tiles and narrow lowered areas 7 represent the joins. The above composition is pressed to the underside of the areas 6 and adheres thereto and can be applied as a mixture of colours. The 'joins' 7 may be coloured with a suitable coloured paint. The composition may also be applied to the underside of simple sheet material or tho the inner surface of hollow articles. Simulated mosaics may also be produced by using a flat sheet 11, where the joins 12 between the 'tiles' are already marked on. A backing sheet 9 may be attached to the back side of the coloured material.

Description

2338714 1. TRANSPARENT ARTICLES AND ADHESIVE COLOURING SUBSTANCE.
This invention comprises a transparent decorative article and a means of colouring the article under its surface with a non liquid form of paint.
To enable representations of articles such as mosaic pictures to be made without assembling them from separate pieces a representation of the surface of a mosaic picture is made from a sheet of thin transparent material. The transparent sheet can then be coloured on its reverse or underside. It is required that the means of colouring should not consist of a liquid paint. The non liquid paint consists of a substance similar to coloured clays with an adhesive mixed into the substance enabling it to adhere to the transparent sheet. The adhesive paint substance may also form a means of attaching the decorative article to a protective backing or to attach it to a further article.
According to this invention a sheet of thin transparent material is shaped to represent the tiles and the spaces between the tiles of the surface of a mosaic picture. An indentation in the shaped sheet of material represents the spaces between the tiles and serves as a quide, for a coloured substance to be adhered to the underside of the tiles. The coloured substance comprises a non liquid clay - like material in a range of colours having added to it in manufacture a substance with an adhesive property. The clay-like non liquid form of paint adheres to the transparent sheet representing the mosaic picture and will also adhere the picture to a backing board or another article.
2. The indentation in the shaped sheet of transparent material that represents the spaces between the tiles may be coloured on the top side with the clay-like form of paint or coloured with a conventional paint or by being pre-printed on the transparent material.
In an alternative form of this invention a sheet of transparent material may be printed with outlines to define spaces which are to be coloured on the underside with the clay-like adhesive form of paint. In this form the transparent sheet of material may remain flat or be made to take a three dimensional shape.
In a further form of this invention a transparent three dimensional hollow article way be coloured by the clay-like adhesive form of paint adhering to the inner surface. The hollow article that has been coloured on its inner surface may be filled with a suitable substance or component that adheres to the adhesive clay-like form of paint.
In a further form this invention may be used to form a decoration on the inner or underside of a transparent sheet or article that has not been pre-shaped or printed with an indication of where the colouring material is to be placed and the choice of decoration or illustration is left to the craftworker or artist.
3.
A specific embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Fig.l. shows a side section through a sheet of thin transparent material 5 that is shaped to represent the top surface of a mosaic bile 6 and the division between 7. Fig.2. shows a side section through a shaped sheet of thin transparent material 5 with the clay-like adhesive paint 8 adhering to the underside of the sheet 5 and adhering to a backing sheet 9. The division 7 between the tiles 6 is coloured on its top surface with paint 10. Fig. 3. shows a side section through a flat sheet of transparent material 11 that has printed outlines 12 on its surface and the clay-like adhesive paint 8 adhering to the underside. The printed outline 12 of a picture may be on the top or underside of the transparent material 11. Fig. 4. shows a section through a hollow transparent article 13 coloured on the inside with the clay-like adhesive paint 8 and a filling substance 14 adhering to the paint 8.
hereas this invention has been described principally in terms of representing a mosaic picture its application applies to other forms of transparent representation to be coloured on the underside or inside with the clay-like adhesive form of paint. A transparent article or picture to be coloured may be representative of an article made from one or more pieces or a number of articles.

Claims (10)

CLAIMS.
1. A non liquid form of paint consisting of a colouring substance with a clay-like or modelling material like texture in a range of colours that has an adhesive substance added to it during manufacture that will enable it to adhere to other articles and is used for the purpose of colouring transparent sheets of material or hollow transparent articles on their underside or inside surface.
2. An article representing a mosaic picture made from a thin sheet of transpakent material that is shaped to simulate the tiles of a mosaic and the spaces between the tiles and is coloured on the underside with the substance described in claim 1.
3. An article according to claims 1 and 2 in which a f lat sheet of thin transparent material is printed with outlines to represent the spaces between the tiles.
4. An article according to claims 1 and 2 in which the space between the tiles has been pre-coloured by printing or foil blocking. 5. An article according to claim 2 in which the portion of the shaped transparent sheet that represents the division between the tiles is coloured on the top surface with the substance described in claim 1 or with a conventional paint.
5.
6. An article according to all previous claims in which a thin sheet of transparent material is shaped or has outlines printed upon it to represent articles or pictures other than a mosaic for the purpose of colouring in the manner described.
7. A three dimensional hollow article that is coloured on its inner surface with the substance described in claim 1.
8. A transparent sheet of material or a hollow transparent article to be coloured on its underside or inside surface with the claylike adhesive paint substance described in claim 1 and which has not been embossed or printed to indicate the decoration or illustration.
9. The attachment of an article made and coloured according to all previous claims to a backing sheet or to a further article or to a filling substance by means of its adhering to the adhesive colouring substance.
10. A part or parts of any article or a kit of parts to make any article for the purpose of colouring under a transparent surface by the means described in all previous claims. 12. An article or parts of an article substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
