Abstract
A method and apparatus for encoding data (15,) produces a code stream (153) of code words (190, 192, 194) where each code word includes two subsets of code bits. Each subset of code bits is constrained by a different maximum transition run constraint. In an alternative embodiment, the method and apparatus produced a code stream (153) comprised of alternating even bit locations (188) and odd bit locations (186), where the even bit locations are constrained by a different maximum run length constraint than the odd bit locations.
