Abstract
A container for use in fibre analysis. The container comprises a mesh of a synthetic plastics material that has been subjected to a cold plasma or glow discharge treatment.
Description
1 A Container for use in Fibre Analysis This invention concerns a
container for use in fibre analysis.
2338485 Fibre analysis is used, for example, to analyse the fibre content of animal feedstuff.
In fibre analysis, a material to be analysed, for example, an animal feedstuff, is placed in a sealed, porous container and a solvent is flushed in and out of the container. Any components in the animal feedstuff that are soluble in the solvent are flushed out of the sealed, porous container. The porous container is weighed at the beginning and the end of the process.
US-A-5,370,007 discloses an analysis system for determining the fibre content of an animal feedstuff. A predetermined weight of the animal feedstuff is placed in a polyester filter bag and the bag is heat sealed. The bag is then exposed to a heated detergent solution for a time that is sufficient to remove substantially all of the soluble solids from the feedstuff. The bag is rinsed and dried before being weighed.
GB 2 136 123 discloses a dissolution testing machine for measuring the dissolution rate of chemicals from tablets or pellets. The pellets are placed in a cylindrical, mesh basket. The basket is made from a metal mesh that is open at the top and bottom. The bottom of the basket is closed by a layer of gauze fabric, held by a small elastic band, and the top is closed by a perforated plastic cap. The pellets are placed in the basket and the basket is placed in a container that contains a solvent. Up and down movement is used to cause the solvent to flush in and out of the basket in a controlled manner to produce dissolution of the pellets.
The present invention is concerned with providing an improved container for use in fibre analysis.
2 In accordance With the present invention, there is provided a container for use in fibre analysis, the container comprising a mesh of a synthetic plastics material that has been subjected to a cold plasma or a glow discharge treatment.
The inventor has found that the container of the invention is an improvement over known containers because the solvent can be more easily flushed in and out of the container. The analysis time can therefore be reduced.
The inventor has also found that the mesh exhibits improved adhesion to other materials, for example, a plastics framework that may be used in the container.
The synthetic plastics material can be polyester, polypropylene or nylon. The synthetic plastics material is preferably polyester. The polyester is preferably Saatifil Polyester reference number PES23117, available from SaatiTech S.pA Veniano, Italy.
The mesh can have an aperture size of between 10 and 50 microns. The preferred mesh size is between 20 and 30 microns.
The synthetic plastics mesh is exposed to a source of cold plasma and air in a vacuum chamber. The process is also known as glow discharge. The plasma and air restructures the surface of the plastic at a molecular level. The extent of restructuring can be controlled.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the following figures in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of a fibre analysis container; Figure 2 is a front view of the fibre analysis container., and Figure 3 is a bottom view of the fibre analysis container.
3 Figure 2 shows body 1 and bayonet cap 2 of the container. The body 1 and the cap 2 are made of plastics material. The body is 53 mm long and has a diameter of 25mm. The bayonet cap has a diameter of 28 mm. Both the body 1 and the cap 2 are open frameworks that are covered by meshes 3 and 4. The meshes 3 and 4 are flush with the inside surfaces of the frameworks. Mesh 3 is attached to the body 1 and is sold by SaatiTech S.pA under the name Saatifil PES23117. Mesh 3 has an area of 2225 mml. Mesh 4 is attached to the cap 2 and is sold by SaatiTech S.pA under the name Saatifil PES50140 PBO. Mesh 4 has an area of 380mm2. The total mesh area of the container is 2985 MM2. Meshes 3 and 4 have been subjected to a cold plasma treatment.
