Abstract
The card comprises an envelope 7,10 enclosing a folded member 2,4,5 which when portion 2 is pulled reveals a hitherto concealed image 4 through an aperture 12 in the top surface 7 of the envelope. As the image 4 rises through the aperture portion 5 folds over the envelope top surface. Additional information may be revealed through windows 13,14.
Description
1 PULL-UP PICTURE CARD The present invention relates to apparatus for
displaying a picture or graphic image.
2336567 Companies are constantly seeking to produce interesting ways of presenting pictures and graphics, relating either to their products, or to promotional activities in which they are involved. Furthermore, Companies are constantly looking for new ways to promote these products, and therefore there is a constant demand for inexpensive 'novelty' items which companies can give away as promotional gifts, either with or without their products. According to the present invention, there is provided apparatus for displaying a picture, whereby the picture or graphic remains hidden within the body of the apparatus until deployed by the user, by pulling one piece of the apparatus out of the other until the image is visible. In the examples provided, the picture card consists of two main elements, made from'one single strip of paper, card, plastic or any suitable material. There is an envelope, which may be rectangular, or may be a variety of shapes, folded and glued in such a way as to leave one end open. On the front surface of the envelope is cut an aperture, which may be rectangular in shape. There may be other apertures or'windows' cut into the front surface, and indeed jnto the back surface of the envelope. Folded into the envelope, and continuous from the top edge of the front of the envelope, is a member, which descends into the envelope, to the base, or far end, and returns at a fold in it's base, as a flat single member, all the way back to the top 9f the envelope, that is the open end, behind the front member. The front member is divided into segments, separated at two folds. This member, when folded into the Picture envelope, is glued to the top of the inside of the envelope. At the point where the aperture occurs in the envelope, the front member, which in the second and third stages of it's descent into the envelope, co-incides with the aperture in the first section of that front interior member.. Below that member, is another member, the same width as the second member from which it descends from a fold, but slightly longer, which continues into the member at the base, which is wider than the two preceding narrow members, but which is slightly narrower than the envelope which contains it On both of the central narrow members, may be a graphic or an image, one of which will be visible through the aperture cut in the front of the envelope. The lower narrow member, may also bear an image, but this will be hidden by the front of the picture card, until the display mechanism is deployed by the user. The base of the front interior member, ends in a fold, and another flat member, a flat rectangular shape, cut slightly smaller than the envelope, reaches back up to the top of the card, to the open end of the envelope, where apertures cut into the edge of both front and back enable the user to pull upwards on this member. When the rear interior member is pulled upwards it compresses the central strut, located on the front of the interior member, into that shorter member, of the same width as the strut, but cut slightly smaller than the aperture immediately behind which it is located. This action pushes the top narrow member upwards so that it rises upwards from the fold which occurs just below the top edge of the main aperture cut into the front of the envelope. At the same time, the fold which occurs just above the bottom of that aperture, also breaks, and the longer, lower narrow member of the Interior member is revealed through the aperture. As the user continues to pull upwards, the interior central strut rises upwards until it is completely visible on the front of the card. the shorter, top part of the central strut is at this point completely folded back on itself, and is itself covered by the lower part of the central strut An embodiment of the present invention will now be discussed by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a front view of the envelope, and a rear view of the interior member prior to assembly Fig. 2 is a back view of the envelope (interior) and a front view of the interior or 'moving' member prior to assembly Fig. 3 is a view of the interior of the envelope, with the interior or moving member folded initially into the envelope.
1..
1 2 Fig. 4 is a front view of the same, showing the top narrow member of the central strut showing through the aper-ture in the front of the envelope. Fig. 5 is again an interior view showing the back rectangular part of the interior member, folded upwards from it's base into the envelope. Fig.,6 shows the two 'wings'against which the back part of the envelope will be attached and glued, pushed inwards to contain the interior moving member.
Fig. 7 shows the complete picture card from the back. Fig.8 shows the completed picture card from the front. The two cuts on either side of the main aperture are extra windows which may display further graphics, printed either on the interior moving member, or on the rear wall of the envelope.
Figs. 9 through to 14 show in both front and side elevation, how the picture card is deployed by the user, to display the image hidden in the card. Fig.15 shows the die-curprofitle of an alternative version of the picture card, which constructs to form a 'double sided' picture, ie, with one 'pull-out' on either side. Fig. 16 shows a 'side-by-sde' version whereby two images are incorporated, on the same side. Fig 17 shows the picture card in a circular configuration.
The apparatus for displaying a picture consists of a single thin sheet of pq)er, card, plastic or some other inexpensive suitable material. The apparatus 1 is made up as an envelope 7, 8,9, 10, within which a folded member 2, 3, 4, 5 moves within the envelope 7, 8, 9, 10. to push a folding central strut 4, 5 upwards through an aperture 12, cutintothe front surface 7 of the containing envelope 7, 8,9, 10, to display on the front surface 7 of the picture card 1, the lower part of a hitherto concealed central strut 4 of the interior moving t member 2,-3, 4, 5, which may carry an image or graphic. One either side of the front aperture 12, there are two additional apertures 8, 9, which may reveal other graphics or information relating to whatever image is displayed on the central strut 4. The apparatus 1, is formed by folding the interior element, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 towards the back of the front 7, along the fold D-D, so that the top section 5 on the narrow central strut is seen through the apperture 12 cut into the front 7. This section 5, is cut so that it is slightly smaller than the apperture 12. The top of the interior element 2, 3, 4, 5...which is 6, is glued to the rear of the front 7. This section 6, does not move, but acts as an anchor or retainer for the rest of the interior moving element 2, 3, 4, 5, which moves upwards and downwards within the main envelope 7, 8, 9, 10. Connected to section 6 at the fold C-C, is the first portion of the central strut, 5, which in the flat position is is clearly visible through the front aperture 12 on the front 7 of the apparatus 1. The central strut 4, 5 is narrower than the section 6 to which it is attached, and than section 3, which it meets and is cut into, almost to the fold A-A, but not quite. At fold A-A, the interior or moving section folds backwards on itself and continues back up the back interior of the apparatus 1, as a single rectangular flat member 2, until it reaches the open end of the envelope 7, 8, 9, 10. re-appearing between anchor section 6 and the inside top of the back section 10. This member 2 is visible at indents 15, cut into the back section 10, and 11 cut into the front section 7, through 6. The picture card 1 is completed when the rear plane 10 is folded upwords along fold E-E to meet flanges 8, 9 which have been folded inwards towards the back of the front plane 7, and now overlapping the upward folded interior element 2. The picture card 1 is sealed by gluing the back plane 10 to the inward folded flanges 8,9. Figs 9 - 14 show how the picture card 1 is deployed by the user. Fig 9 shows the picture card 1, as it would be received by the user, the top of the interior moving panel 2, visible between the indents 11, 15. The picture card 1 is shown in front elevation in Fig. 9 and in side elevation in Fig.10.
3 Fig 11 shows. a front elevation of what happens when the user pulls upwards on the exposed top section of the interior plane 2, and Fig. 12 shows the operation in side elevation. As the interior moving panel 2 is pulled.upwards, it pushes ions 3, 4 upwards from fold A-A. The pressure on fold B-B pushes section 5 outwards, folding it along fold C-C. Continuing the pulling on panel 2, forces the section 5 to rotate almost 180 degrees about fold C-C, while the lower half of the central strut 4 is completely revealed above the parapet of the aperture 12 in the front of the picture card 7, 1. Simultaneous with the concealed ion 4 coming into view as the panel 2 is pulled upwards, any information printed on the sides of the interior panel 3, will come into view through the side apertures 13, 14. Anything which was visible through those apertures 13, 14 prior to the deploying of the picture card 1, will be hidden by the ascending panel 3 as the pulling upwards on panel 2 progresses.. Other apertures may be cut into either side- of the picture card apparatus 1, and information or graphics may be added to either the interior of the invelope 7, 8, 9, 10 or to the exposed surfaces of the interior panel 2, 3, 4, 5. to be revealed or concealed as the interior sections 2, 3, 4, 5 move within the envelope 7, 8, 9,10 If a stiff material is used to manufacture the picture card 1, the revealed ion 4. will tend to present itself almost parallel to the front 7. If, however, a supple or lighter material is, the section 4 will tend to curve inwards and upwards---from the front plane 7.
