Abstract

The face mask, which may be of plastic or rubber and which provides an air-tight seal with the face, comprises internal and external skins C, D with a void E therebetween, a ventilation inlet A passing through the mask and a suction outlet B communicating with the void E and for connection to a suction device. Plastic spacers may help to maintain the void between the skins and continuous, flexible rubber pads may be positioned around the perimeters of the skins so as not to occlude the void. The mask adheres to the contours of the face and creates an air-tight seal via suction during ventilation therapy.

Patent Specification
Face Mask for the Mechanically Ventilated Patient.
2336547 To be used in the clinical environment. The face mask is used as an adjunct when delivering to the patient, a specific type of mechanical ventilation that requires an air tight seal. The face mask works on the principle of the mask adhering to the contours of the face and creating an air tight seal via suction during the simultaneous delivery of ventilation therapy from the mechanical ventilator. The suction is generated from the suction units already available at the hospital bed sides. At present, strap held masks have to be forcibly held on by the therapist in order to achieve an air tight seal. This is intrusive for the patient and increases labour intensity. The face mask is designed to accommodate the dimensions of the standard forms of suction and ventilation available The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:Fig 1. Illustrates a section of the face mask. Fig 2. Illustrates a front elevation of the face mask. Fig 3. Illustrates a side elevation of the face mask.
Referring to the drawings:
In Fig 1, label A indicates the ventilation inlet. This is continuous through to the internal skin of the mask. In Fig 1, label B indicates the suction outlet. This is continuous through to the external skin of the mask. In Fig 1, label G indicates the disposable suction connector. It is designed to fit the suction outlet and the resident standard suction tubing. In Fig 1, labels C and D indicate the internal and external skins of the mask respectively. In Fig 1, label E indicates the void between the internal and external skins, C and D. This void is continuous with the suction outlet, label B, but not the ventilation inlet, label A. In Fig 1, label F indicates the flexible soft rubber padding. This is continuous around the perimeter of both the internal and external skins, labelled C and D. It is positioned so there is no occlusion of the suction void, label E. In fig 3, label H indicates a sample of the plastic spacer between the skins, labelled C and D. This maintains the void, label E.

Claims (3)

Claims
1. The face mask is of plastic and rubber construction.
The face mask has internal and external skins which provide a void. The face mask has a suction outlet aperture.
4. The face mask has a ventilation inlet aperture.
5. The void mentioned in claim 1 provides the passage for suction.
6. The void mentioned in claim 1, is continuous with the suction outlet mentioned in claim 3, which connects to the resident adjustable suction device. The ventilation inlet mentioned in claim 4, is continuous with the internal skin of the mask mentioned in claim 2. The dimensions of the ventilation inlet aperture mentioned in claim 4 correspond to the standard ventilators.
8. The internal and external skins of the mask mentioned in claim 2, have continuous flexible rubber pads around the perimeters. They are positioned so not to occlude the void mentioned in claim 2.
9. The face mask has an optional plastic connector which is designed to connect the mask suction outlet aperture mentioned in claim 3, and the resident suction device tubing.
