Abstract
Flights for darts comprise an array of open cylindrical tubes arranged substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the dart body and positioned towards, or at, the rear end of the dart to provide aerodynamic stability and control. The array preferably encircles the rear end and can be permananetly moulded to the dart shaft or pushed onto the end of a dart body making use of incisions in that body.
Description
PATENT ACT 1977 PATENT RULES 1990 PATENT APPLICATION 2336115
SPECIFICATION RELATING TO CYLINDRICAL FLIGHTS FOR DARTS AND OTHER PROJECTILES
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to flights as conmnly used for the guidance of darts and other projectiles.
Such flights are usually manufactured in feather, paper or plastic in the case of darts for leisure purposes, and manufactured in metal or other rigid material for industrial application, and typically have four flights at right angles to the shaft of the dart or projectile, equally distanced from each other at the back end of the shaft.
The present invention aims to provide an improved flight for darts and other projectiles.
The present invention provides flights for guiding the dart or projectile which comprises a conventional shaft attached to the front end of the dart or projectile, but about which are moulded/attached m the back end of the shaft cylindrical tubes which are open each end and clear of obstruction throughout. The cylindrical tubes extend along the shaft of the dart or projectile to the approximate extent of the longitudinal span of the conventional flight, and fully encircle the shaft and abut each other.
Conventional darts or projectiles rely upon the conventional flight as described above for aerodynamic stability, but the present invention provides aerodynamic stability by airflow through the cylindrical tubes encircling the shaft of the dart or projectile.
More particularly, the improved flight is shown in the drawing numbered 1 enclosed and shows the cylindrical tubes affixed to the circumference of the shaft of the dart or projectile at the back end of the shaft, and the cylindrical tubes may be attached, moulded, welded or otherwise permanently affixed to the shaft, or alternatively especially in the case of darts as commonly used in the game of darts, may be attached to the shaft by inserting a circle of cylindrical tubes to the rear end of the shaft in the conventional manner of affixing flights, by pushing the flight on to the back end of the shaft in two previous cut incisions, see figure 2 enclosed.
PATENT ACT 1977 PATENT RULES 1990 PATENT APPLICATION SPECIFICATION RELATING TO CYLINDRICAL FLIGHTS FOR DARTS AND OTHER PROJECTILES
Claims (2)
1. Cylindrical flights for darts and other projectiles which give aerodynamic stability and the ability to guide the direction of darts and projectiles when propelled through the atmosphere in a specified direction.
2. Cylindrical flights for darts as claimed in 1, which are permanently moulded or attached to the shaft of the dart at the rear end of the missile, or set nearer to the front end of the same.
Cylindrical flights for darts as claimed in 1 and 2 above, which are in particular in the case of darts used for pleasure purposes in the game of darts, capable of providing aerodynamic stability when fixed at the rear end extremity of the shaft of the dart in previously cut incisions in the dart shaft, and in which case such cylindrical flights would be rearward of the shaft of the dart, not necessarily immediately abutting and encircling.
L 4. Cylindrical flights for darts as claimed in 1, 2 and 3 above which are of varying lengths an varying diameters (but so that the cylindrical tubes being used as flights for each individual dart shall be uniform in size, position and diameter on each particular dart) and encircling the shaft of the dart or attached to the back end of it.
2. Cylindrical flights for darts and other projectiles as claimed in 1, which are permanently moulded or attached to the shaft of the dart or other projectile at the rear end of the missile, or set nearer to the front end of the same.
3. Cylindrical flights for darts and other projectiles as claimed in 1 and 2 above, which are in particular in the case of darts used for pleasure purposes in the game of darts, capable of providing aerodynamic stability when fixed at the rear extremity of the shaft of the dart in previously cut incisions in the dart shaft, and in which case such cylindrical flights would be rearward of the the shaft of the dart, not necessarily iiately abutting and encircling.
4.
Cylindrical flights for darts and other projectiles as claimed in 1, 2 & 3 above which are of varying lengths and varying diameters, and encircling the shaft of the dart or other projectile or attached to the back end of it.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS Cylindrical flights for darts as an array of open cylindrical tubes arranged substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the dart body and positioned towards, or attached to, the rear end of the dart which give aerodynamic stability and the ability to guide the direction of darts when propelled through the atmosphere in a specified direction.
