Abstract
A motorcycle has an engine, an ignition system and an immobiliser device. The engine has a flywheel (14), a flywheel cover (18), and screws (20) or the like securing the flywheel cover to the engine to form a flywheel housing (12) the inside which is not immediately accessible. The ignition system has an ignition unit (28), an engine position sensor (22) disposed within the flywheel housing and cooperating with a formation or element (24) on the flywheel so as to sense the position of the engine, and a cable (26) extending from inside the flywheel housing to outside the flywheel housing for connecting the sensor to the ignition unit. A first part (36) of the immobiliser device is disposed inside the flywheel housing and disconnects or shorts-out the cable or the sensor, but is operable to connect the sensor and cable as normal. Another part of the immobiliser device (30) is operable by an authorised user of the motorcycle to cause the first part to operate to connect the sensor and cable as normal. The immobiliser device cannot therefore be overridden without removing the flywheel cover, which is a time consuming task, in many cases requiring other parts of the motorcycle to be dismantled first.
Description
2335705 TITLE Motorcycle Immobilisers
DESCRIPTION
This invention relates to motorcycles and is in particular concerned with immobiliser devices which are operable to disable the ignition systems of motorcycle engines.
More particularly, the present invention is relates to a motorcycle having an engine and an ignition system, wherein: the engine has a flywheel, a flywheel cover, and screws or the like securing the flywheel cover to the engine to form a flywheel housing; and the ignition system has an ignition unit, an engine position sensor disposed within the flywheel housing and cooperating with a formation or element on the flywheel so as to sense the position of the engine, and a cable extending from inside the flywheel 10 housing to outside the flywheel housing for connecting the sensor to the ignition unit.
The present invention takes advantage of the fact, in many cases, the inside of the flywheel housing is not immediately accessible, particularly if, in order to gain access, other parts of the motorcycle must be dismantled first, in addition removing the screws for the flywheel housing.
In accordance with the present invention, an immobiliser device is provided which includes: circuit means disposed inside the flywheel housing disconnecting or shorting-out the cable or the sensor and operable to connect the cable and sensor as normal; and means operable by an authorised user of the motorcycle to cause the circuit means to operate to connect the cable and sensor as normal.
A specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described, purely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a partially cutaway end view of part of a motorcycle engine, and also with reference to patent document GB-A-2308927 (and in particular figure 7 thereof), the content of which is incorporated herein by reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, part of a crankcase casting 10 of a motorcycle engine forms part of a housing 12 for a flywheel 14 which is mounted on the crankshaft 16 of the engine. The flywheel housing 12 is closed by a cover 18 (part of which is shown) which is secured to the crankcase casting 10 by screws 20. A crankshaft position sensor 22 is mounted inside the flywheel housing 12 and co- operates with a notch 24 in the periphery of the flywheel 14 to produce an electrical pulse each time the notch 24 passes the sensor 22.
In a known arrangement, a cable 26 directly feeds the pulses from the sensor 22 to an ignition unit 28, and the ignition unit 28 controls the timing of ignition of the engine in dependence upon the pulses. The cable 26 passes through a hole in the crankcase casting 10.
In the embodiment of the invention, a master transponder unit 30 is mounted on the motorcycle (for example near the ignition switch), and a complementary slave transponder unit 32 is carried by the owner of the motorcycle or other authorised person (for example on their key ring). Furthermore, the master transponder unit is connected by a cable 34 which passes through the hole in the crankcase casting 10 to a circuit unit 36 mounted inside the flywheel housing 12.
The operation of the master and slave transponder units 30,32 and the circuit unit 36 are as described with reference to figure 7 of GB-A-2308927, to which reference is directed. In essence, when the motorcycle ignition is switched on, the master transponder unit 30 detects whether the correct slave transponder unit 32 is responding to it by virtue of their adjacency, and if so, the master transponder unit 32 provides coded data on the cable 34 to the circuit unit 36. The circuit unit 36 either shorts-out or disconnects the cable 26 between the sensor 22 and the ignition unit 28 (thus disabling operation of the ignition unit 28 and accordingly operation of the engine), unless the correct coded data is being received on the cable 34, in which case, the circuit unit 36 allows the sensor 22 and ignition unit 28 to operate as normal so that the engine can be started and run as normal.
Claims (2)
1. A motorcycle having an engine, an ignition system and an immobiliser device, wherein: the engine has: a flywheel (14); 5 a flywheel cover (18); and means (20) securing the flywheel cover to the engine to form a flywheel housing (12) the inside which is not immediately accessible; the ignition system has:
an ignition unit (28); an engine position sensor (22) disposed within the flywheel housing and cooperating with a formation or element (24) on the flywheel so as to sense the position of the engine; and a cable (26) extending from inside the flywheel housing to outside the flywheel housing for connecting the sensor to the ignition unit; and the immobiliser device includes: circuit means (36) disposed inside the flywheel housing for disconnecting or shorting-out the cable or the sensor, and operable to connect the cable and sensor as normal; and means (30) operable by an authorised user of the motorcycle to cause the circuit means to operate to connect the cable and sensor as normal.
2. A motorcycle having an engine, an ignition system and an immobiliser device, substantially as described with reference to the drawing.
