Abstract

The bite alarm comprises a vibrating pad 5 to alert the fisherman when a fish takes the bait. The device may comprise a switch mechanism 2, 3 (and figure 2) where a circuit is completed when the line of rod 1 releases the upper element of the mechanism and it falls to contact the lower member of the mechanism. Electrical connection is made and the power supply unit 4 activates a vibrating pad 5. The pad may be replaced by a spot light 6.

Description

2335338 BITE ALARM YWRATING There are a wide selection of alarms on the
market, designed for night fishing and general use. This alarm is an angling aid for the deaf, designed mainly for night fishing, although it proves equally good m the day time.
The alarm is very sensitive and once it is activated will continue until it is reset. It works in the same manner as an electronic bite alarm, from line movement between the hook bait and the reel on the fishing rod FIG 1.
Instead of a high or low tone audible buzzer, this alarm has a vibrating pad 5 that is put inside a pocket or held close to a persons body.
This invention is made up of three main parts:
The switch modified monkey climbers 2 & 3 FIG 1 Power supply unit P. S.U. 4 FIG 1 Alarm vibrating pad 5 or spot light 6 FIG 1 As shown in FIG 1 the fishing rod is best set up to leger, with bolt rig, block feeder, or dead bait. The rod is then placed on a rod pod or two rod rests. The bite indicators are two modified monkey climbers 2 and 3. These act as a switch and are connected to the P. S.U. 4, with insulated wire cables 5 metes long, map fit connections at each end.
FIG 2 shows an enlarged detailed sketch of the modified monkey climber. Two copper weld tags 12 are stuck to the main body 14 and 14a, 10 is an electrical wire cable with two cores, one core is soldered to the lower tag, whilst the other core is connected to the top tag via a small diameter single d copper wire 11 for flexibility. 15 is the line from the rod trapped on the climber. The monkey climber is pushed into the ground under the rod on the rest, so that the whole unit is below the eyes of the rocL When the fish pulls the line away from the rod the line is released, the main body 14 drops down, the lower body 14a is fixed m position- The electrical connection is made when the two tags touch one another. If a fish pulls the line towards the rod the weight of the main body will be sufficient to let the tags meet. The alarm will then be activated and will continue until it is turned off at the P.S.U.
To reset lift the main body 14 until the line can be trapped again, take up the slack Mi the line until the main body 14 is lifted by the line under tension to a mid point on the central support bar. A line clip on the rod holds the line in place, then remove the bale arm on the reel to allow the line to be taken as a fish takes the hook bait. If the reel has a bait runner facility just take up the slack, then switch on the circuit at the P.S.U. Thealarmisnow reset.
A standard audio buzzer bite alarm could easily be modified to act as a switch for this alarm, even a remote controlled is possible. A monkey climber can be made using an electrical float switch.
The P.S.U. is operated by a 6 volt battery that is fully rechargeable. Two rods can be fished at the same time. The P.S.U. has two red L.E.D's that indicate which rod has a bite ie: left or right rod. Once alerted to a bite the left or right circuit can be switched on/off independently leaving the other circuit still in operation. There is a power on/off switch with a separate test switch that lights up a green L.E.D. The P.S. U. when fully charged will give about five hours of continual use.
The vibrating pad FIG 3 is made from a small 6 volt motor 18, fixed to a bracket 17. The motor with the bracket is fitted miside a plastic box. A piece of mild steel bar 19 has a hole drilled through it, and is fitted to the spindle of the motor with a grub screw 20. The hole is drilled off centre on the bar, it is the uneven weight of the bar while it is turning at high speed that causes the whole unit to vibrate. The pad is connected to the P.S.U. by a wire cable.
The spot light FIG 1 item 6 has a 6 volt x 0.75 amp bulb and is fitted on a bank stick that is pushed in the ground for a visual warning. This same spot light can be used instead of the vibrating pad if preferred. It can also be connected to the charging socket on the P. S.U. and used as a night light while the alarm is in the ready mode, without affecting the vibrating pad. The spot light is connected to the P.S.U. by a wire cable.
