Abstract

The alarm gives an audible warning of decreasing distances between a moving object eg vehicle or blind person and a stationary object by means of issuing a high frequency ultrasonic signal, which bounces back off the stationary object. The time taken for the return signal is converted into an audible bleep the frequency of which increases as the distance shortens until such time as the moving object comes within eighteen inches of the stationary object, at which time the beeps go into a continuous mode.

Description

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION:
2335272 It is acknowledged that there are a large number of accidents involving vehicles reversing, when the driver is unaware that stationary objects are out of vision, or move into the area to the rear of the vehicle, again out of the vision of the driver, e.g. children, prams, dogs, there is a need for a driver to be able to determine exactly where the extemal parameters of his vehicle are in relation to a stationary object, so as to prevent an accident when reversing.
There is also a need for a blind person to be aware of stationary objects in his path that are not capable of being detected by the forward sweep of a stick. There is a particular need to detect overhanging or low protruding objects.
The invention is designed to give audible warning of decreasing distances between a moving object and a stationary object. This could for instance be a reversing vehicle or a blind person.
The decreasing distance as afore stated is recognised by the changing frequency of audible bleeps, from a single bleep when the invention is energised, to a rapidly increasing series of bleeps as the distance between a moving object and a stationary object, until such time as the moving object reaches a position normally eighteen inches from the stationary object.
The primary capability of the invention is the prevention of a moving object or person colliding with an unseen stationary object.
The invention concerns a device which emits an ultrasonic signal of a pre determined frequency so as to be inaudible to the human ear. This ultrasonic signal is provided by means of an electronic arrangement incorporating transducers in the transmitting (A1) and receiving mode (A2) in drawing (A). The invention is D.C. operated, but can be operated through an A.C. supply.
The signal is given off in a continuous mode and so designed and arranged as to bounce of all known substrates and return to the transmitting unit whereby it is received by a receiving transducer.
-t- DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION:
Through the use of microchip technology within the electronic design (A3) the time taken from the issuance of the ultrasonic signal, to the time the signal is received back by the receiving transducer, is converted into a time frequency signal.
An audible alarm is connected to the issuing unit as shown in (A4) and the time frequency signal is emitted through this device. When the unit (A) is energised and a signal commences to be issued from the unit, the audible signal is in time intervals to as to give a recognisable interval between bleeps.
When the signal bounces off a stationary object within a given pre-set distance, the signal automatically goes into a continuous tone immediately informing the user that they must stop immediately.
If the invention is to be used in connection with a vehicle, the unit is fitted centrally at bumper 5 height so as to achieve maximum performance.
When fitted to the rear of a vehicle the positive lead to the signalling unit is connected to the positive lead of the vehicle's reversing lights and the neutral to any suitable chassis point. A jack plug lead is also connected to the unit to connect the audible signalling device which is normally located in the boot are of the vehicle. Audible devices of varying acceptable decibel levels are used, this being dependent upon the level of insulation in the boot area.
Similarly an audible device can be connected and be visible in the drivers area, this would normally take the form of a decreasing illuminated bar line.
If the invention is used by a blind person the unit is either worn around the neck on a support or clipped into the top pocket. In this instance the unit would normally be powered by a rechargeable battery, and be fitted with a type of hearing aid device extending from the sensing unit to the ear.
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION:
The emitted signal is given out in a cone shape centrally from the emitter and any stationary object within this peripheral range of vision is automatically detected. The peripheral cone shape can be adjusted.
The invention can be fitted to all types of vehicles irrespective of the voltage supply. In the case of Heavy Goods Vehicles there would need to be extension lines from the point where the unit is installed, which could for instance, be at the end of a trailer.
