Abstract
A wheelchair has an upper frame 2 which can pivot at 3 to raise a disabled person, the rear seat section 5 can then be removed and the wheelchair located over and lowered on to a toilet. The wheelchair is also foldable.
Description
TOILETING WHEELCHAIR
This invention relates to a toileting wheelchair.
Wheelchairs are commonly used for the transportaion and short term seating of disabled persons (hereafter referred to as the person). With current legislation on 'lifting' a visit to the toilet may necessitate the use of a hoist to transfer the person from an easy chair on to a wheelchair and then on to a toilet. The reversal of this procedure is then required to place the person back into the easy chair.
According to the present invention there is provided a toileting wheelchair comprising a wheeled base frame which is open at the rear, to this is located a removable rear seat section. Pivoted to the front of the base frame is a raisable upper frame which incorporates a front seat section with a cut away centre section ( to facilitate the toileting function).
It also has a seat back to which is attached a retaining belt to support the person when in the raised position, a knee belt' is also provided. Attached to the upper and base frames are two telescopic, spring, pneumatic or rubber assistors to balance the weight of the person. A locking device which is operatied by levers, positioned at the handles retains the upper frame in the raised or lowered position. Pressure relief of the buttocks can be effected by raising the upper frame. The chair is fully padded and upholstered to allow all day use. The wheelchair can fold.
TOILETING WHEELCHAIR
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
Figure 1 shows in perspective the wheelchair in the lowered, normal use seating position.
Figure 2 illustrates the wheelchair in the raised position with the retaining belts 6 and 14 fastened
Figure 3 shows the chair in the raised position with the rear seat section 5 removed from the base frame.
Figure 4 shows the wheelchair located over the toilet pan 11 and is in the lowered toileting position.
Figure 5 shows the wheelchair with the rear seat section and both telscopic assistors 4 removed and the the upper frame2. folded down to the base frame.l, Referring to the drawing the wheelchair comprising a wheeled base frame 1 which is open at the rear, upon which is located a detachable rear seat section 5. To the base frame 1 is attached the upper frame 2 via pivots 3. The upper frame, incorporates a front seat section 7 which has a cut away centre section and a seat back 12 to which is secured a retaining belt 6. To the front of the upper frame 2 is attached a knee belt 14.
In order to utilise the wheelchair in its toileting capacity position the wheelchair to the front of the toilet pan 11, secure the person to the seat back 12 using retaining belt 6 and knee belt 14, release the lower position lock using levers 9, raise the upper frame 2 using handles 10 until the raised position lock engages. The rear seat 5 is now removed giving good access to the persons clothing and allows the wheelchair to be pushed over the toilet pan 11. The brakes 13 can now be applied.
TOILETING WHEELCHAIR
The upper frame 2 is now lowered by releasing the raised position lock again using levers 9 and handles 10. The toilet function can now be carried out. A reversal of the above procedure will return the wheelchair to normal all day use.
