Abstract

A vehicle speed control system comprises roadside signalling beacons 10, sensing means 16 mounted on or in a vehicle 18,20 and speed control means 22 in the vehicle which is responsive to the sensing means 16 for limiting the speed of the vehicle. The beacons transmit signals to the sensing means and the sensing means is adapted to co-operate with the speed control means in response to the signal received from the beacons, so that the speed of the vehicle may be limited automatically under the control of signals from the roadside beacons. The beacons are located on the roadside at or adjacent to the perimeter of a zone where it is desired to control the vehicle's speed. The system preferably employs radio or infra red signals.

Description

"Vehicle Speed Control System it The present invention relates to a vehicle speed control system. In particular, the present invention provides a system for limiting the speed of a vehicle in accordance with pre-set speed limits in controlled traffic zones through which the vehicle incorporating the system passes.
At present, no such vehicle speed control system is provided which limits the speed of a vehicle according to pre-set speed limit restrictions, wherein the system functions by an interaction between the vehicle and the road upon which the vehicle is travelling.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a vehicle speed control system comprising: - signalling means; - sensing means; and - speed control means wherein the signalling means is adapted to provide a signal to the sensing means and wherein the sensing means is adapted to co-operate with the speed control means in response to the signal received from the signalling means, the speed control means being adapted to control the speed of a vehicle.
Preferably the signalling means is located on a roadside at or adjacent to the perimeter of a zone where it is desired to control the vehicle's speed.
Additional signalling means may located within the controlled zone if required.
Preferably the sensing means is located on or in the vehicle.
Preferably the speed control means comprises a device located on or in the vehicle, said device being responsive to control signals generated by said sensing means and being adapted to limit the maximum speed of the vehicle in response to said signals.
The signalling and sensing means may comprise any suitable type of wireless communication, including electromagnetic communications. In the preferred embodiments, radio or infra red signals are employed.
The signals transmitted by the signalling means identify the relevant speed limits, and may be encoded by means of any one of a variety of well known coding methods.
A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings which is a schematic plan view of a section of roadway illustrating the arrangement and operation of the invention.
In this particular embodiment, the vehicle speed control system comprises signalling means such as roadside beacons 10a, 10b located adjacent to roadsigns 12a and 12b positioned on either side of a single carriageway road 14 and indicating applicable speed limits, sensing means 16a, 16b located in first and second vehicles 18 and 20 travelling in opposite directions on the road 14, and speed control means 22a, 22b located in the vehicles 18 and 20.
As illustrated, vehicle 18 is travelling in the direction of arrow A and is about to leave a first speed limit zone A and to enter a second speed limit zone B. The second vehicle is travelling in the direction of arrow B from zone B to zone A. For the purposes of the present discussion, the speed limit in zone A will be taken to be 60 mph and the speed limit in zone B to be 30 mph.
While travelling in zone A, the maximum speed of vehicle 18 has been limited to 60 mph. As vehicle 18 passes beacon 10a, sensing means 16a detects signals transmitted from beacon l0a, indicating the speed limit for zone B. The control means 22a responds to the sensing means 16a so as to limit the maximum speed of vehicle 18 to 30 mph as it enters zone B; e.g. by controlling the operation of the engine 24a of vehicle 18. As long as vehicle 18 remains in zone B, its maximum speed remains limited to 30 mph. Vehicle B is travelling in zone B with its maximum speed already limited to 30 mph. As it passes beacon lOb, it receives a different signal from that transmitted by beacon l0a, indicating the speed limit for zone A, so that the maximum speed of vehicle 20 is allowed to increase from 30 mph to 60 mph as it enters zone A.
It will be understood that, alternatively, zone A might be "uncontrolled", with no limit being imposed on the maximum speed of vehicles once they have left zone B, the signals from beacon lob serving to deactivate the speed control means 22b of vehicle 20 as it passes the beacon lOb.
The signalling means l0a, lob is a signal transmitting device which transmits a signal to the sensing means 16a, 16b. In this particular embodiment, the signal transmitting device takes the form of an electromagnetic transmitter which transmits an electromagnetic pulse (particularly in the infra-red spectrum or in the radio frequency range) to the sensing means.
The sensing means is a signal receiving device which receives a signal from the signalling means. In this particular embodiment, the signal receiving device takes the form of an electromagnetic receiver which receives an electromagnetic pulse (again, preferably in the infra-red spectrum or radio frequency range) transmitted by the electromagnetic transmitter. The sensing means co-operates with the speed control means 22a, 22b, the speed control means being adapted to control the speed of a vehicle in which the speed control means is located as described above.
The electromagnetic transmitter is located at the side of a selected road, in a position suitable for transmitting a signal to vehicles passing the transmitter travelling along the selected road. The electromagnetic receiver is located on or in the vehicle, for example, on or in a bumper of the vehicle, or it may be located on, in or behind part of a radiator grille of the vehicle. The electromagnetic pulse sent by the transmitter may be encoded to provide information to the receiver or, alternatively, the electromagnetic transmitter may be adapted to provide pulses which vary in frequency, triggering a response by the electromagnetic receiver according to the frequency of the transmitted pulse. Other means of encoding the required information will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The information encoded in the pulse concerns pre-set speed limit restrictions for the road along which the electromagnetic transmitter is located. If pulses of varying frequency are utilised, the different frequencies relate to different pre-set speed limits.
Improvements and modifications may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
