Abstract
A sill and seal arrangement for an external door comprises a sill member (11) securable to a threshold (13) and having an external edge (14) and an internal edge (15). The internal edge is formed so as to retain an extension member (16A) selectable from a range of extension members to adapt the arrangement to a level difference at the threshold between internal and external floor/ground levels. There is also disclosed a means for sealing the sill with respect to the door comprising an L-shaped member attached to the lower edge of the door and a flexible seal.
Description
SILL AND SEAL ARRANGEMENT
This invention relates to sill and seal arrangements for external doors.
There are numerous designs of sill and seal arrangements, all claiming some advantage over other designs. However, the choice of sill depends as often as not on the precise arrangements at the threshold to which the sill is to be fitted and, in particular, on whether the levels inside and outside the threshold are the same or different due e.g. to carpet or other floorcovering.
The present invention provides a sill and seal arrangement for an external door that is capable of adaptation to any threshold level configuration, and which can also be arranged for both inward and outward opening
The invention comprises a sill and seal arrangement for an external door comprising a sill member securable to a threshold and having an external edge and an internal edge, the internal edge being formed as a retaining member for an extension member selectable from a range of extension members to adapt the arrangement to a level difference at the threshold between internal and external floor/ground levels.
The internal edge may be formed with a depending member with ground clearance and the extension members may then have in cross-section hook-like formations fitting under said depending member which clamps them in position when the sill arrangement is secured at the threshold.
The sill member may be a hollow member having a floor which slopes downwardly towards the external edge and overarching tread members extending towards each other from external and internal edges.
In between the tread members may be a gap affording access to the interior of the hollow sill member.
The range of extension members may include one which extends internally from the internal edge level with the top of the depending member. The said range may also include one which extends internally from the internal edge forming a continuation ofthe overarching tread member down to the ground/floor level ofthe outer edge. These two extension members cater respectively for thresholds which are stepped up, outside to inside, and level.
The arrangement may also comprise a cooperating, seal-carrying member adapted for attachment to a door at the threshold.
The seal-carrying member may comprise an L-section member fitting the lower external face and the underedge of the door and having a flexible seal, carried in a slot, adapted to engage the tread members when the door is closed over the sill member. The flexible seal may comprise exterior side and interior side tongues in inverted V configuration.
The edge between the upright and horizontal limbs of the L-section may have a drip moulding. A concave face ofthe L-section vertical face may constitute a rain deflector.
The arrangement may comprise extruded sections.
One embodiment of sill and seal arrangement according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a cross-section of an aluminium extrusion forming a sill
member, with one design of extrusion member; and
Figure 2 is a cross-section like Figure 1 with a different extension
member.
The drawings illustrate a sill and seal arrangement for an external door comprising a sill member 11 securable (as by screws through possible pre-drilled holes 12) to a threshold 13 and having an external edge 14 and an internal edge 15, the internal edge 15 being formed as a retaining member for an extension member 16A, 1 6B selectable from a range of extension members to adapt the arrangement to a level difference at the threshold 13 between internal and extemal ground/floor levels 17, 18.
The internal edge 15 is formed with a depending member 19 with ground clearance 21 and the extension members 16A, 1 6B have in cross-section hook-like formations 22 fitting under said depending member 19 which clamps them in position when the sill arrangement is secured at the threshold 13.
The sill member 11 is a hollow member having a floor 1 1A which slopes downwardly towards the external edge 14 and overarching tread members 23, 24 extending towards each other from external and intemal edges 14, 15. The downwardly sloping floor flows water condensed within or forced by external pressure in bad weather into the interior of the hollow sill member down towards the external edge 14 which can be provided with pre-drilled drain holes, not shown.
Between the tread members 23, 24 is a gap affording access to the interior of the hollow sill member 11, primarily, of course, to access the holes 12 for securing the sill member 11 at the threshold 13, but which also collects and disperses rainwater from the door.
The range of extension members includes one, 16A, which extends internally from the internal edge 15 level with the top ofthe depending member 19. This particular extension member caters for a threshold at which the floor level inside is higher than the outside ground level, to adapt for any difference in level due to carpet or other floorcovering.
The range also includes one, 1 6B, which extends internally from the internal edge 15 forming a continuation of the overarching tread member 24 down to the ground/floor level ofthe outer edge - this serves a threshold with the ground outside and floor inside level.
Figure 2 also illustrates a cooperating flexible seal-carrying member 25 adapted for attachment (as by screw holes 25A) to a door 26 at the threshold 13.
The seal-carrying member 25 comprises an L-section member fitting the lower external face 27 of the door 26 and the underedge 28 thereof and having a flexible seal 29 carried in a slot 31, adapted to engage the tread members 23, 24 when the door 26 is closed over the tread members 23, 24.
The flexible seal 29, a rubber extrusion, comprises exterior side and interior side tongues 31, 31 in inverted V-formation.
It is designed so one tongue rests on top of one ofthe tread members 23, 24, the other tongue against the edge of the other of those members, the arrangement being reversible to accommodate both inwards and outwards opening of the door - as illustrated, the door opens inward.
The L-section member 25 has, on the edge between the upright and horizontal members a drip moulding 33.
The arrangement is completely fashionable from aluminium and rubber mouldings and facilitates fitting at a wide variety of threshold configurations.
