Abstract

A security door 1 for a vending machine comprises at least one retaining member attached to the door and arranged to slidingly and removably engage with a housing 8 attached to the vending machine when the door is placed in the housing. A slidable locking member 5 is operated by a lock and arranged to slide, in use, between a position in which it allows the door to be opened and removed from the housing and a position in which it retains the door in a locked position in the housing.

Description

SECURE DOOR This invention relates to secure doors of the type employed on vending machines such as arcade machines, video game machines drink dispensers, gambling machines, etc.
Machines of the above type are in public areas and, given that they contain money, have always been a target for thieves. A standard approach in the design of such machines is to channel money received by them into a secure cash box area which is accessed by a secure lockable door when the machine needs to be emptied of money.
Whilst such doors provide some deterrent, attempts at theft still occur, and even if attempts to break the security door are unsuccessful, such doors often have to be replaced once an attempt at theft has been made.
Replacement of such doors is a costly and time consuming business, given that the security that they are required to provide means that they often have complex hinged retaining mechanisms.
According to the present invention there is provided a security door for a vending machine, the security door comprising: at least one retaining member attached to the door and arranged to slidingly and removably engage with a housing attached to the vending machine when the door is placed in the housing; and a slidable locking member operated by a lock and arranged to slide, in use, between a position in which it allows the door to be opened and removed from the housing and a position in which it retains the door in a locked position in the housing.
Preferably at least two retaining members are provided. The locking member may be arranged so that it is biased, in use, into the locking position. The lock may be a barrel lock with attached rotating cog, the rotating cog engaging with the locking member.
The door may be laminated.
One example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a rear view of a door according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a side view of a door according to the present invention positioned in a housing.
Referring to figure 1, an example door 1 has a barrel lock 2 with attached rotating cog 3 having teeth 4. The teeth 4 engage with a slidable locking member 5 which is biased by a spring 6 into a locking position, as shown in figure 1 and housed in a housing 8. In use, rotation of the barrel lock 2 by a key (not shown) slides the locking member 5 via the teeth 3 and allows the door to pivot out away from the housing 10 surrounding the door.
Retaining members 7 are arranged to engage with the inner surface of the housing 10 to retain the door 1 in position when the door 1 is installed and the locking member 4 in its locking position. Removal of the door is effected by unlocking the door 1, pivoting it, and then sliding the retaining members 7 out of engagement of the housing 1. Installation of the door is a reverse of this procedure.
As can be seen from figure 2, the door 1 is, in this example, a laminate door formed from two or more sheets of metal. As can also be seen from figure 2, the door is designed so that it sits within a recessed housing 10.
This provides additional security in that it is difficult for a levering mechanism, such as a screw driver, to be inserted between the door 1 and housing 10 in an attempt to remove it.
As will be appreciated from the above, the installation and removal of the security door is extremely simple without compromising the security of the door. This means that a damaged door can be replaced quickly and easily without undue effort from an operator.
