Abstract

233,337. Ragg, J. J. April 30, 1924, [Convention date]. Strainer separators; baskets.-The syrups or solutions obtained in the manufacture of sugar are subjected to centrifugal action in a perforated basket covered with a filter cloth having a layer of non-adhesive friable material. The outer tank 1 has an upper rim 3 extending inwards over a similar rim 16 on the basket 2 and carrying spraying jets 4. Spraying jets 5 are also fitted on the wall of the tank. At the lower end of the tank is a deep gutter 6 with discharge cocks 7, 8, 9. The movable top 10 of the tank has a glass window 23 and a lamp 24. The feed pipe 11 passes through the top and can be adjusted by rack and pinion gear 26 according to the depth of deposit in the basket. The wall 2 of the basket is of perforated metal with strengthening bands or hoops, and has on its inner side a close fitting layer of metallic gauze of fine mesh: over this is a layer of filter cloth 14 held in place by spring rings 15. A second cloth 27 is supported over the first cloth by loops at one end and has a layer of fine coral sand, or the space between the cloths may contain paper, sand, calcium phosphate, felt or the like to prevent the solid impurities from coming into contact with the filter cloth 14. The basket bottom has discharge openings which can be closed by trap-doors 18 operated by rods sliding in grooves in the driving shaft 20 when the nut 21 is loosened. The liquid to be clarified and filtered is introduced through the pipe 11. the flow being regulated by the cock 25 and the basket is rotated; the filtered liquid is drawn off through the cock 7. To cleanse the basket the cock 7 is closed, steam and hot water is sprayed from the jets on to the deposit; the solution from this is withdrawn through the cock 8. The rotation is then stopped and the trap-doors 18 opened for the discharge of the mud through the chamber 12, and the cover filter cloth 27 is removed. The basket is rotated slowly and the main cloth 14 is sprayed from each side, the liquid being drawn nff through the cock 9. The machine is then ready for use again. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the inclusion of curved rims and gutters instead of the rims 3 and gutters 6. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
