Abstract
A demountable partition or ceiling comprising frame members 4, 6, 8, 10, supporting generally planar panels 2 in which two or more panels are separated by frame members 10 curved in the plane of the panel. At least one of said panel members 2 may be made of a material through which light propagates, e.g. glass, and at least one may be opaque, e.g. fibre board.
Description
DEMOUNTABLE PARTITIONS AND CEILINGS
This invention relates to demountable partitions and demountable ceilings for buildings.
Conventional demountable partitions and demountable suspended ceilings are constructed exclusively of rectangular and square panels supported by a frame assembled from straight frame members.
The invention seeks to provide a different appearance by providing a demountable partition or ceiling for buildings, comprising a frame constructed of frame members supporting generally plane panels constructed of panel members, in which two or more panel members are separated by frame members curved in the plane of the panel.
At least one of said two or more panel members may be made of a material through which light propagates, e.g. glass, and at least one may be opaque, e.g. fibre board.
Preferably, the curved frame members are arcuate.
The frame members may conveniently be formed with longitudinal grooves, and one member is joined another by straps or brackets extending from a groove in the one member to a groove in the other, so maintaining the members in alignment.
In that arrangement, members may be joined by said straps or brackets both at their ends and intermediate their ends.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a first partition embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is an elevation of a second partition embodying the invention;
Figure 3 is an elevation of a third embodiment of the invention;
Figure 4 is an elevation of a fourth embodiment of the invention;
Figure 5 is a pictorial view of a straight frame member as fitted between two double panels;
Figure 6 is a pictorial view of a strap/infill member used to join two frame members end to end;
Figure 7 is a pictorial view of a joining piece used to join curved frame member to a straight frame member or to each other;
Figure 8 is a pictorial view of four joining pieces of Figure 7 attached to a straight frame member;
Figure 9 is a pictorial view of joining pieces of
Figure 7 used to join curved frame members to each other;
Figure 10 is a pictorial view of the strap/infill member used to join two curved frame members;
Figure 11 is a pictorial view showing brackets used to join frame members at right angles; and
Figure 12 is a pictorial view showing frame members configured for single painless.
Referring to the drawings, the partition shown in
Figures 1 to 4 are constructed from panel members 2 and frame members including straight vertical members 4, straight ceiling members 6, straight floor members 8 and curved members 10 which are curved in the plane of the partition. The partition of Figure 4 has an additional straight member 12.
The frame member shown in figure 5 has an aluminium extrusion 20 having a core comprising a box section 22.
Longitudinal ribs 24 and 26 project from both sides of the box section.
The ribs 24 project further than the ribs 26. The ribs are grouped so that a rib 24 is placed on each side of each rib 26 and spaced therefrom so as to receive a 7rsection strap/infill member 28. There are three groups of ribs 24,26 allowing the frame member to be set up to receive double or single painless. The arrangement in Figure 5 is for a double panel. The two outer groups of ribs 24,26 are provided with straps 28 which as will be explained are used to join members. Between its ends the frame member 20 is provided with infill members of the same section as a seat for the panel members, not shown in Figure 5. Trim is added in the form of an extruded aluminium channel section member 30 between the panels and moulding strips 32 which retain the panel members. Additional ribs 27 at the edges of the extrusion 22 locate the moulding strips 32. The panel members maybe opaque. e.g. fibre board, or light transmitting; translucent or transparent, e.g. glass. The same principle is used in the ceiling and floor members 6 and 8, but these are formed with the ribs 24,26 on one side only.
To form curved frame members 10, the aluminium extrusion 20 is bent to an arcuate curve. The strap/infill members 28 are also bent to suitable curves. The channel section members 30 and moulding members 32 are bent to shay after extrusion.
Figure 10 and 11 show how the straps 28 are used to join frame members end to end. The straps are screwed to the frame members as shown in Figure 5. The screw head 34 passes through a clearance hole 36 in the strap 28 and is tightened up on a bridge portion 38 so that the screw head does not interfere with the panel especially when that is glass.
The same Figures show right angle brackets 40 used to join frame members at right angles.
In order to join curved frame members tangentially to each other or to straight frame members, a joining piece 42 shown in Figure 7 is used. This is formed with and end 42 to join to and end of a curved member by means of the straps 28. The end 42 is formed with the appropriate groups of ribs 24,26 on both sides. The reverse side, as seen in
Figure 7, tapers to meet the front which is formed with grooves 46 to receive the tops 48 of the section straps as can be seen in Figure 8.
In Figure 9, where joining pieces 42 are joined to each other they are joined by suitably bent strap/infill members 28. Y-shaped joining pieces 52, presenting three ends, are use to join a straight frame member to two curved frame members.
When a single panel is required a different moulding strips 54 are used to retain the panel on the central rib 26.
Although the embodiments described are all partitions, the same principals can readily be applied to ceilings.
