Abstract
A low battery voltage alarm device for use in a portable radio device, stores a plurality of alarm sounds from which one may be selected and set as the alarm, thus helping the radio device user distinguish the alarm sound of his device from that of other nearby devices. Information on several kinds of alarm sounds is stored in alarm sound information storage means (2, fig. 2). A user may operate an operation section (3, fig. 2) which selects one of the alarm sounds and sets it as an alarm sound for informing the user of a drop in battery voltage. Thus when a low voltage detector (1, fig. 2) detects that the battery voltage of the radio device is lower than a reference voltage, it sends a low voltage detection signal to a controller (4, fig. 2) which retrieves the selected alarm sound information from the storage means (2, fig 2) and passes it to an alarm sound generator 5, which produces the selected alarm. The alarm sounds may include periodic alarms, periodic volume-stepped alarms and a tune (see figure 4).
Description
LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE ALARMING DEVICE AND METHOD
FOR USE IN PORTABLE RADIO DEVICE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to low battery voltage alarming device and method for use in a portable radio device. In particular, the present invention relates to low battery voltage alarming device and method utilizing an alarm sound generator for informing the user of a drop in a battery voltage by a sound.
Description of the Related Art
Conventionally, a low battery voltage alarming device for use in a portable radio device would detect a voltage drop in the battery and inform the user of the voltage drop by producing an alarm sound.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the conventional low battery voltage alarming device for use in a portable radio device is constructed with a low voltage detector 11, a controller 12 and an alarm sound generator 13.
The low voltage detector 11 detects the battery voltage of the portable radio device in order to compare the detected voltage with a reference voltage. In case when the detected voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the low voltage detector 11 generates a low voltage detection signal. Then, as the controller 12 receives the low voltage detection signal from the low voltage detector 11, the controller 12 generates information of the predetermined alarm sound for informing the voltage drop. As the alarm sound generator 13 receives the information of the alarm sound from the controller 12, the alarm sound generator 13 actually produces the alarm sound so as to inform the user of a drop in a battery voltage.
However, with respect to such conventional low battery voltage alarming device for use in a portable radio device, it is difficult to distinguish the alarm sound of one portable radio device from the alarm sound of others, in case when a plurality of portable radio devices are operating. This is because the portable radio devices have the same alarming sound for informing the drop in a battery voltage.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide low battery voltage alarming device and method for use in a portable radio device which are capable of distinguishing an alarm sound of the portable radio device where they are applied with an alarm sound of other portable radio devices, in case when a plurality of portable radio devices are operating.

Fig. 1 is a block diagram showing a conventional low battery voltage alarming device for use in a portable radio device;
Fig. 2 is a block diagram showing a low battery voltage alarming device for use in a portable radio device as one embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a flow chart explaining an operation of the low battery voltage alarming device shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a diagram showing one example of information of alarm sounds stored in an alarm sound information storage of the low battery voltage alarming device shown in Fig. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring now to the drawings, a detail description of a preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described.
Fig. 2 shows a low battery voltage alarming device for use in a portable radio device as one embodiment of the present invention. As illustrated in Fig. 2, the low battery voltage alarming device of the present invention comprises a low voltage detector 1, an alarm sound information storage 2, an operation section 3, a controller 4, and an alarm sound generator 5. The low voltage detector 1 is connected to the controller 4. The alarm sound information storage 2 is connected to both the operation section 3 and the controller 4. The alarm sound generator 5 is connected to the controller 4.
As the low voltage detector 1 detects that the battery voltage of the portable radio device is lower than a reference voltage, it generates a low voltage detection signal to be given to the controller 4. The alarm sound information storage 2 is storing information containing several kinds of alarm sounds, which are provided as means to inform the user of a drop in a battery voltage. The operation section 3 is operated by the user to select a certain alarm sound among the alarm sounds in the information stored in the alarm sound information storage 2.
Accordingly, the selected alarm sound is set as an alarm sound to be actually used in informing a drop in a battery voltage.
As the controller 4 receives a low voltage detection signal from the low voltage detector 1, the controller 4 reads out from the alarm sound information storage 2, the information of the alarm sound being selected and set by the operation section 3, so as to pass out the information to the alarm sound generator 5. On receiving the information of the selected alarm sound which is read out by the controller 4, the alarm sound generator generates the selected alarm sound, so as to inform the user of a drop in a battery voltage.
Next, the operation of the low battery voltage alarming device for use in a portable radio device according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to Fig. 3.
In step S1, the controller 4 confirms whether it has received a low voltage detection signal from the low voltage detector 1. When the controller 4 confirms the receipt of the low voltage detection signal from the low voltage detector, the operation will proceed to step S2. In step S2, the controller 4 reads out from the alarm sound information storage 2, the information of the alarm sound being selected and set by the operation section 3 for use. Then the operation proceeds to step S3. In step S3, the controller 4 gives the information of the selected alarm sound being read out at step S2 to the alarm sound generator 5, in response to which the alarm sound generator 5 generates the selected alarm sound for informing a drop in a battery voltage. Then the operation returns to step S 1.
Fig. 4 shows one example of information of alarm sounds stored in the alarm sound information storage 2. In Fig. 4, the alarm sounds proceed from the left side to the right side. The alarm sounds indicated as types 1, 2 and 3 are sounds defined by on and off states, i.e. sounds with predetermined volumes being generated intermittently. The alarm sounds indicated as types 4 and 5 are sounds defined by soft to loud (loud to soft) alteration, i.e. sounds with consecutively generated volumes being altered by steps. The alarm sound indicated as type 6 is a tune.
According to the present invention, several kinds of sounds are being stored in the alarm sound information storage, among which the user can select and set a desired alarm sound through the operation at the operation section, in case when a drop in a battery voltage is detected, by which the desired alarm sound can be outputted. Therefore, even in situations where a plurality of portable radio devices are operating, it is possible to distinguish an alarm sound of the portable radio device applying the present invention from an alarm sound of other portable radio devices.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of the following claims.
